Torchlight User Review
reasonable price, gorgeous cartoony graphics and smooth gameplay, but without originality, replayability and strategy

- Just Right

- 10 to 20 Hours
- The Bottom Line:
- "Rent it first"
First off, I have played only the warrior type for about 10-15 hours, so my review is based on that. Just like all the Action RPG's, Torchlight is an addictive and entertaining game (at least for the first 3-4 hours). Another level deeper down the dungeon, overpowering your enemies, finding loot, a skill upgrade, you know the drill. It's addicting.
You'll be able to choose from 3 characters, basically a warrior, wizard and rouge,You also get a companion in this game, your choice of a cat or dog. The game does everything to make your life easy. That is good but also bad. The fights are easy. The pet can carry as much as you do, run into town to sell its loot, cast magic and wear rings and amulets; it has the same level as you have and takes care of itself very well, there's no danger of losing it, meaning you don't get to care about it.
Technically, the game runs fine, even on old machines. All the interface elements meant to make your life easy are there. Visually, the game is charming and the graphics are quite detailed. Sounds also are OK, there's nothing wrong with that.
Gameplay is reasonably well polished and fast paced but very shallow. The biggest problem is this game doesn't try to be anything more than a Diablo clone. Honestly, it Has nothing new to offer. The entire game is just one dungeon, You just keep going deeper and deeper, level after level. There is only 1 town and the town is very limited. So the all Torchlight world is just a small town and many many randomized levels you teleport to and from.
There is no need to strategy at all. You can just close your eyes and click away. Press your hotkeys for Mana/Health once in a while and you're good to go. You just click around the screen, kill mobs endlessly and pick up loot. just click both mouse buttons and your mana and hp potions binds.
I found that after a few hours, it's so repetitive. There are also some side quests but they add nothing to game, I mean the quests are repeating - defeat this guy at floor 30 then when you complete it - thats right - defeat the guy at floor 31.
Overall, Since it's only 20 bucks, it's a risk worth taking. The game is fun at first, but gets really boring quickly. So it's better to play the demo or rent it first to see if you like it.

Torchlight is mindless and addictive, though questionably fun.
