Torchlight Hands-On
We find out how the popular PC game fares on the Xbox 360.
Torchlight is one of the freshly announced Xbox Live Arcade titles that are part of Microsoft's House Party event set to run in February and March. The game is a conversion of the sleeper hit from developer Runic Games that served up a tasty dose of Diablo-esque dungeon exploration. We tried out a work-in-progress version of the game at Microsoft's CES press event and are pleased to say that the game looks to be making the move to the 360 in style.
If you missed Torchlight when it hit the PC in late 2009, you missed out on a fun dungeon crawler that cast you as one of three adventurers who, with a pet in tow, set out to help the town of Torchlight as it contended with an evil, corrupting force. The quest sends you exploring mining tunnels beneath the town--which are filled with enemies as well as convenient helpings of loot and gold--as you work your way to a face-off against the game's big bad guy. The game's familiar premise is complemented by equally familiar gameplay that calls to mind the best, addictive elements of Diablo with some unique extras that add to the fun.
The Xbox 360 version of the game is a smart conversion of the PC title that brings the gameplay, fantastic art direction, and rich musical score over in style. The work-in-progress version of the game we played, though not complete, was already running smoothly and looked great. We were especially impressed with the tweaks done to the game's interface, which, while different from the PC game, retained its spirit, and the controls worked out great on the 360 controller.
In terms of content, Torchlight brings the core PC game experience over to the 360 with some enhancements, although it leaves some bits behind. The single-player game has been brought over in its entirety and now features a number of different enhancements. You'll find a fourth pet (a small dragon) to choose from, new armor sets, a new quest giver tossed into the mix, achievement points, and an option to send a respect potion to a friend. The only major piece of the original game that's missing is the level editor, which, while unfortunate, isn't the end of the world considering how fun the game is. As far as any other gameplay additions go, while there isn't any multiplayer option, Runic is keeping an "open mind" with regard to DLC once the game ships.
The visuals have also made the leap to the 360 without losing much from the PC game. The original game's low system requirements have made the move to console hardware pretty easy from the looks of things. The 1080p graphics are comparable to the PC, although some tweaks to character animation are being implemented to improve the feel of combat. In our time with the game we got to level six and were impressed by how things are looking. The control makes smart use of the Xbox 360 buttons and triggers to retain the smooth feel of its PC predecessor and make the game a breeze to pick up and play. The game's HUD has seen some tweaks, along with the menu system, but all the information you need is laid out smartly and in unobtrusive fashion, so we're not seeing that there will be much to complain about in the final game.
From what we played, Torchlight is looking great and should be poised to take Xbox Live Arcade by storm. The game is ridiculously fun and addictive, so anyone hungry for some dungeon crawling should keep an eye out for it. Torchlight is slated for release during the five-week Xbox Live Arcade House Party event, which begins on February 16.
Superb D3 void-filler!! I just hope it's not like 2400 points....fingers-crossed for multiplayer DLC...

At least make multiplayer available on the same console, if not over Live...
Still hoping for multiplayer! Don't let me down Runic!
@dratomic don't make up stuff then talk like its facts. Just because YOU don't like multiplayer doesn't mean others don't. Diablo I and ii were immense in co-op and no it was not cut down single player it was exactly the same game, only more fun. Perhaps you just need better friends! This game would have been better with co-op.
Pffff all these comments about multiplayer and co-op... Games like these are great as they are meant to be, single player games. All those development resources that go wasted on multiplayer and co-op that only a minority use more then single player go at the cost of a better\longer single player experience. Co-op is way overrated as is and multiplayer only worthwhile in games specifically designed to be a multiplayer experience. Stop the pay 60 bucks for 10 hours of play decay, stop asking for stuff you dont use.
Can't wait for new one, played the old one to death.
@DrEvilKoala yeah action rpgs aren't as good as the typical rpg's found on pc's or even platforms for that matter, but there a fun distraction, if not a lil' derivative at times, that said, i am looking forward to the dnd action rpg coming to the ps3 through psn, and yeah i know, maybe i am having too many processes open at the same time, or something, i will double check to make sure, thanks for the comment, take care
Torchlight is very good game and nice graphics
I usually strongly dislike these sort of action RPGs, but Torchlight must be the first game in the genre that I thoroughly enjoyed. It comes highly recommended. @Jshaw71 That's odd, Torchlight should run on about ANY PC nowadays. In the options there is even a special thing called "Notebook mode" I believe that makes the game run on practically any PC. The game runs fine on by laptop, and my laptop can barely play most games from 2002.
Had this for the PC for a while I definately reccomend this game
I will almost certainly get this as someone that has been interested but doesn't play PC games. The only question is do I get it when it is new or wait for a deal?
Well, if I didn't already have the PC version, I'd look into this. Torchlight is a very fun dungeon-crawler that nicely fills the void while I wait for Diablo III.
For all of you guys saying that its going to be $60, its an Xbox Live Arcade Game so its only going to be $10- $20. So its the same price as its on the PC
what about ps3? I downloaded the pc demo, and it moves a lil sluggish with my pc being a dual core with 4 megs of ram... seems like an ok game thanks for the news
the game was really good, but it got repetitive after a while. i think i should have played on a more difficult settings, or maybe it's just the genre, I don't like button mashing game either. but really good execution anyway and think it'll be nice on 360.
Its a great game for PC, if you dont have a windows or mac PC you can try the xbox version which will be a good game from what ive seen at the moment! xD
I loved playing this on the PC. Im sure people who didnt pick this up back then and owns a 360 would hae a blast with this one until Diablo 3 comse out. I hope Runic will have a Multiplayer option for this game on the 360.
good try, but not worth to me...
Even without multiplayer Torchlight is a great game, and perfectly suited to XBLA in my opinion. I can't wait for Torchlight 2!
@MJ12-Conspiracy (again) Well... I suppose achievements are a big deal for some people, but I'm not sure who would pay five times more for the same exact game, just with a few more achievements (that don't really do anything, may I add) I canunderstand your second point... but, again, I'm not entirely sure a few seconds of browsing through a menu are really worth spending 50 extra dollars.... Though, that could just be me, being cheap...
Probably pick this up. Bought it on Mac via Steam, but barely played it cause I really don't play many games on the computer. Always been a console gamer. I wish it had co-op. But maybe they will bring the sequel to XBLA if this one does well enough.
@ThePurpleBubble The only problem with most of the games on Arcade is simply the achievements usually suck, the score per game is only 200 points and what they want you to do for them are kinda illogical. Achievements in bigger games have more of them and they are spread out over a wider set of goals not just milestones or kill a set number of enemies.........Plus I don't like having to sift through menus just to start a game up, on PS3 everything is right there on the XMB.
I'm supposing that, since they're working on Torchlight's sequel and it's essentially going to be the same engine, they'll eventually add multiplayer to the XBLA version of the game. Think of how it was added to Lara Croft. Until then, however, I'll be holding off on the purchase since I have it for PC.
@MJ12-Conspiracy Why? So you can pay 60 bucks, as opposed to 10? No thanks.
Starfox15, it's hard to give something that never had multiplayer to suddenly add it. It can cause... problems.
No multiplayer = no sale. I really can't believe it's not multiplayer. It's a crime.
@NiteX Gotta love the bias.
@howie1926 i dont think there will be multiplayer, the original on PC was also sadly missing this.
No multiplayer???
@NiteX I don't know if you are a PC fanboy or a PS3 fanboy but I can assure you the PS3 has as many FPS's as the 360. The PC is the birthplace of today's FPS's, so I'd bite my tongue if I were you.
Cout me among those hungry for some dungeon crawling. Can't wait to try this out.
@NiteX being a fanboy is having an irrational prejudice against someone for owning a certain console. Witch makes your post quite ironic.
I might have to give this one a try when it comes out but it would be better if it was being released in Games On Demand or disc form.......
I want this game seriously
Now torchlight was an awesome game. I played the first one on the PC it was fantastic I am really happy this game is getting an xbox arcade release. Those who love rpgs pick this one up. You wont regret it.
Wavelength121 you only played Crysis in your whole life so switching to rpgs isn't healthy.
Xbox Live Arcade? no, thanks. green box + manual please
Probably the most tedious and boring game I've ever played. At least after the first few hours.
ill be getting this game for sure i love torchlight on pc oh yea
I would prefer if they added more content and put it on a disc.
Hm, if it's 800 points I'll probably get it. Odds are it will be 1200 or even 1600 though...
chomping at the byte
Torchlight was pretty fun on the PC, will be a good game for the Xbox Live arcade
Very excited for this to come out... looks like soooo much fun!
I didn't even know it was coming to XBLA. But, I love the game and I love dungeon-crawling ARPGs so I'll check it out. I'll play Torchlight on as many things as I can.
This looks kinda fun, I'll definately try a demo if there will be one.
Can't wait to get this
Great, this a beast on pc, i'm glad console gamers can now enjoy this hns rpg.
Torchlight is a joy on pc so I could see it having success on the 360
