Just adding 1 thing here... I think it's a mistake to present the classes as closed ways to play. Right now I'm playing an engineer with dual wands, which is quite distant from the description given here. I love that kind of versatility, it really gives the game a lot of replayability

I'm with you. I'm an Outlander, but I'm also beefing up spells a'la Ember Mage.

Torchlight 2 is a great example of "If it ain't broke ..."

Innovation is nice, but most times it is a gamble. This game keeps what works and adds stuff that nudges it up a notch without going too far ahead of itself.

I hope when they create more Torchlight games, they developers keep it as it is and just add more interesting stories and memorable characters. I especially love the cartoon type animation of the game. Visuals like that never get old or look dated compared to games with more "realistic" graphics. Borderlands 2 also proves this true.

 Too true.

I own the first Torchlight for PC via GOG (DRM-free rules). I own Torchlight II via Steam. Both are every bit worth owning.

Rather than "changing" something that didn't need it, Runic opted for building upon what made the first game great. The result: kickass sequel.

After playing a bit more, this game really delivers.  I recommend playing it on Veteran for anyone that has played an ARPG before though.  The fights are just so much more dynamic than "that other game" I feel like I'm wading into a battle depending on different situations and the challenge always feels fair.  Plus getting loot drops that are actually useful is a welcome site.

For $20 it's a steal!

Great review Carolyn but I honestly think the developers are being too nice with the price, a masterpiece like this should at least be worth $ 30

This is a really fun game. Completely agree with Carolyn, on Normal difficulty the game is easily manageable, but difficult enough to keep you on your toes. The endless stream of minibosses, and bosses that break into minibosses upon their death, makes this a really fun game. Well worth the $19.99 pricetag

Great review and this game gets better and better the more you play it.

Game looks pretty good, but I am too busy collecting loot in Borderland 2 right now to grab another loot fest game.

This game has the appeal over D3 loot system... Ive played 300hs of diablo and got only 4 lengendary parts... from the gameplay perspective and level design TL 2 is also superior and engaging... D3 is more about  GRIND for auction... nothing more... I wish TL2 had a better storyline the only flaw IMO.

Diarma10
Diarma10

@Leonagard This is my only complaint of the Torchlight series in general, I'd love a more in depth storyline, but then diablo-em-ups tend to have light stories.

This game is good and all, but can someone tell me what's the hate with D3? I know that the always online thing sucks and the loot is kinda meh, but IMHO it's still a good game.

@501stormtrooper not worth of the 12 years of waiting.  If the game was released 2 years after Diablo2, then the reaction would have been a lot different.    People was expecting a masterpiece, and instead we got a not so good game, that was developed around the auction house.

Blizzard must have spent ridiculous fortune to buy D3 the same score that was awarded to Torchlight 2.

philMcCrevis
philMcCrevis

@Venomlemon @Talavaj Do you mean advertising costs? Anyway I agree that although the t3 score seems fair the d3 score was overblown. d3 deserves a 7.0 for it's polish alone....gameplay and loot systems deserve a 5. Notice no professional site that relies on advertising mentioned the horrible loot design?

philMcCrevis
philMcCrevis

@dave2k2  @philMcCrevis  @Venomlemon  @Talavaj i just mean that the polish alone gets it a 7 out of 10...i'm acknowledging that the polish is world class its the just the design flaws that really detract from the game.  I got to inferno act 2 and just couldn't bring myself to farm it anymore.  farmed for 50 hours trying to get gear to proceed but it just wasn't happening and i didn't enjoy spending hour upon hour marginally upgrading gear in the AH.  like most other players that have abandoned D3, i found it more tedious and distracted by the AH than enjoyable.  doesn't mean you shouldnt enjoy it if you do - congrats if thats the case.  I just don't as much as i want to i just can't stomach loging in anymore.  perhaps thats why they have lost 80% of their player base already

I found the game to be great but I have just one problem with it and its a big one.

I didn't like any of the classes. I hated them. And that prevented me from playing sometimes.

My only other quibble is that she compared a part of T2 to D3 saying D3 was superior but she didn't return the favor by calling out ways T2 is superior to D3. I don't think that's fair but obviously irrelevant in my enjoyment of the game.

This is a fair review and i think the score is fair but Carolyn dropped the ball entirely on d3. She didn't mentioned a dammm thing about the loot issue or fact that you either have to grind for literally hundreds of hours or buy gear to progress. At is is contrary to the series and an obvious cash grab she should be ashamed of herself for not disclosing that fact to the readers. Str8 up lack of integrity on her part. Why do you think all the senior editors passed on these two reviews? Controversial yes but she showed her true colors by lying to us readers

@clqtte Sorry i beg to disagree.I played both D3 and T2 and D3 surely failed to be as good as T2 in many aspects, yes, and even i prefer T2 over D3.But D3 is nowhere near being bad. It's even better in some things. For example,Diablo 3 's cutscene beat the shit out of Torchlight 2,unarguably. Diablo 3 offers much more visual flair than T2.D3 has PvP multiplayer(here,or on the way?I ain't sure about that, but it's surely gonna be a feature)Torchlight 2 is better, but Diablo 3 sure ain't a nightmare...

Carolyn's review is very informative and of course, as with all their video reviews, extremely concise yet as straight-to-the-point as ever. It's a good-looking game, as well.

Sure is a minor flaw the fact that you can't drop stuff into the floor but... why not implementing that? doesn't the loot appear on the floor when you kill something, to begin with?

Fantastic game for the value.  Though it may not innovate, it shows that a great game of this genre can be made and sold at a modest price and still be great.

Really enjoying this game.  But i can't say it is better then D3.  D3 had FAR more interesting characters, and the ability to change your build, or tweak skills made D3's skill-sets superior.  Also the story in D3 (while somewhat weak) seriously outshone T2.  T2's story is told poorly, and is boring.  D3's story wasn't innovative, but at least the cutscenes were a nice reward.  Were as in T2, the cutscenes are almost comical...  T2 does outdo D3 in the loot.  While D3 feels like they are constantly keeping the good stuff from me, in T2 there is a constant influx of loot that makes every boss fight, chest, or hell, even a pile of rocks, exciting.

strawberry9

@j3radley_rhayne LOL You're playing D3 and T2 for all the wrong reasons. Stick to RPG"s.

j3radley_rhayne
j3radley_rhayne

@strawberry9 No I'm not...  Sorry you think enjoying a story, or decent skill customization is to much to ask for this type of game... I on the other hand, don't...  A RPG style game (even if it is considered a hybrid of RPG) with a lame story is ok in your book?...  sad...

Raellis
Raellis

@j3radley_rhayne Maybe, but just compare time and money spent into each of those two games.

Can you really judge Torchlights story and cutscenes after that?

Also, hack and slash games aren't played for the story, everyone knows that.

Warlord_Irochi
Warlord_Irochi

@j3radley_rhayne I think they both aim for different audiences.  The ideal is always if you enjoy both (if you have the required time, of course lol)

Diablo 3's story was god awful, one of the worst parts about it. But the combat and overall gameplay is better than this game no doubt. The problem with Diablo 3 is the loot it is very boring and not rewarding. If Diablo 3 fixed it's loot problem somehow it would take a giant post-taco bell dump on this $20 Diablo 2 clone.

"But the combat and overall gameplay is better than this game no doubt." Totally disagree with this post... matter of opinion, but the only thing I like about D3 is  Cinematics, tho the end one was damn lame. And  big areas in D3. Gameplaywise, TL2 destroys everything in  D3, specially locked skills for replayability. Finished D3 on Inferno and have not played that game yet. @bryjoered2007  @j3radley_rhayne

@bryjoered2007  @j3radley_rhayne They did fix their loot problem.  It is called price gouging at the Real Money Auction House.  I saw this coming miles away and haven't touched the game since trying the Starter Edition.  I am not going to spend real money to get in game items, and I don't have 8 hours a day to grind and find them myself, so it was a no brainer pass on D3 for me.
