Most Action RPGs have crap storylines anyway, and so skipping the previous titles generally won't alter your experience of the sequels in any way.

I'd compare it to playing Diablo after playing Diablo 2, but given how the move from Diablo to Diablo 2 is more of a movement from survival/horror RPG to more traditional action RPG compared to Diablo and Torchlight to Torchlight 2 is more of a "more of the same only better" it wouldn't work out too well.
At the very least if you like insanely broken mechanics (or at least potentially so) as per games like Disgaea then Torchlight would be worth looking at. I haven't played Torchlight 2 nearly as much as I have Torchlight, or Borderlands 2 for that matter, but so far it doesn't seem to be nearly as easy to make brokenly OP characters/gear in Torchlight 2 as it was in Torchlight.
Stop complaining. I could have done this more painfully. - Dryad from Sacred 2.

Also one can not simply go back and enjoy TL1 no where near as much after the vastly superior and improved TL2 has been released.

TL1 is an unashamed casual dungeon crawl with a huge number of mods available and I'd recommend it as a great casual game for just screwing around and having fun, especially with the huge numbers of mods available to patch over all of the things that you don't like about it.
TL2, well... I didn't enjoy it nearly as much.

The first one has a better end-game in the Shadow Vault (a random infinite dungoen), and (imho) the first one has superior class designs that are simply more fun to play than the sequel's classes.
I rate both games 9/10, but I feel I will play the first one more over the long (long) term.

There are three types of people in the world: people that can count, and people that can't.
