Top Gear Pocket 2 published by Kemco and developed byVision Works is a fun to play Gameboy Color release that has a lot oftechnical problems that make the game unplayable at times. Top GearPocket 2 is the little brother of Top Gear Rally 2 for the Nintendo 64which was received well, but the miniature version is not very good.

TopGear Pocket 2 is a rally racing game that features a variety of cars. There are a lot of cars with slight differences between them. Contraryto having a lot of motorized vehicle options there is a lack of tracksin the game. There are four basic tracks with the ability to play themin regular or reversed form. Different weather conditions can beapplied to each track. The tracks all have different terrain, and thisadds a little variety to the way the game plays.

The game itself is not very difficult to play, but there is one majorflaw in the gameplay that makes the game annoying and unplayable. While passing other vehicles it is nearly impossible to avoid collisionwith them. It is the Gameboy Color and thus the track is only twolanes wide, but the opposing cars are magnetized to your car. Whereveryou try to pass the opposing cars will block and ram you bringing yourcar to a near stop. Most of the time you must drive off the course tomake passes. The game is not forgiving either as you must not collidewith anything to finish in the places needed to advance.

There are very few options when looking to race. There is a careermode that spans 8 years of action, whereas there are 4 races in eachyear. I was able to plow through the career mode in 3-4 hours. Thereis also a basic arcade mode which features vs and time trial races. Top Gear Pocket 2 looks fine in terms of graphics. There are no realissues aside from collision detection, and the weather effects andtracks look pretty good. The sound however, is very lackluster andreally just features the generic car engine sound. Overall Top GearPocket 2 is a good racing game for a handheld, but it is brought downby a few technical flaws.
