Tomb Raider: Review

User Rating: 8.5 | Tomb Raider (The Final Hours Edition) X360
Out of all the different games getting rebooted, Tomb Raider does it right. Instead of the big breasted Lara Croft we have come to love, this Tomb Raider scraps it and comes up with something different. Much like Christopher Nolan's take on the origins of Batman, Tomb Raider explores the origins of Lara Croft and how she became the kick-butt girl that she is. The game finds Lara ship wrecked on a island inhabited by some unusual enemies, its Lara's job to piece to together the mysteries of the island while also finding the rest of the crew members. One downfall I found with the game is that a lot of the supporting characters are very stereotypical and poorly written, the only person with tolerable dialogue is Lara.
The game uses many platforming elements to scale different areas. You better get used to this if you are going to find all of the hidden relics or tombs. Speaking of the tombs, they are pretty lackluster in this game. Most of them are a series of environmental puzzles or most of them look the same, not to mention that there are few of them.
One cool thing about Tomb Raider is that you struggle with Lara through the journey. While Uncharted may have Nathan Drake get a few cuts and bruises, Tomb Raider goes all out to show you what happens to Lara. Though people are finding this controversial, I find it more of a woman's right, not that I think woman should be beaten, on the contrary I think they should be idolized. Tomb Raider doesn't shy from what might happen if you were in this environment. Its the same if a man was in this situation. When Lara was getting hurt or hit, I felt extremely angry, I really wanted to kill the person that hit me, then I realized "oh wait I can!", then I took a shotgun to the enemy. I for one felt every cut and bruise she experienced, as well as how tiring it must be, I also felt exhausted after playing the game. I felt like I was the one with the ripped up shirt and pants with scars on my arms.
Like almost every video game that is single player focused, Tomb Raider has a multiplayer mode. Multiplayer in Tomb Raider feels like a poor mans version of Uncharted's multiplayer, its very lackluster and I found myself not playing a lot of it. If you want my advice play Uncharted's multiplayer.
Overall Tomb Raider is a fantastic game that makes you want to play through Lara's struggles and see her overcome her obstacles. After all there's not many video games that have a really good lead female character.
