Today, though, it means you're likely going to get an entirely different experience from the core game. But, of course, in the least original way possible.
Anyone remember how well Double Dragon's multiplayer was received compared to Double Dragon 2's?

Games have changed. Many games are now so story focused. Its not easy to just add another player to the games because not everyone would have same view of whats entertaining.
Old games like double dragon was simple. All you did was ounch through the levels. Player 1 and player 2 had same goal and desire.
In games like tomb raider player 1 might be more interested in story. Player 2 might just want to shoot stuff. Put them together, and that means one of the is not having a good time.
Seperate multiplayer mode means that everyone's focus is at the same place, the gameplay. Thats why devs are forced to seperate the two.
