Running away from the game's roots, Rainbow Six Lockdown isn't worth buying, only if you're a big fan of the RS series.

User Rating: 3.9 | Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Lockdown PS2
The Good: Incredible CG cutscenes; the guns effects are really cool.

The Bad: The game's difficulty is too elevated; your weapons just don't make effect; the graphics looks PSOne-like; gameplay is too simple; the Rainbow Six feeling isn't present in this game; the soundtrack is incredibly bad; the last boss battle is disappointing; uninteresting offline multiplayer mode; too few weapons; weapons don't feel different from each other; allied AI is a bit dumb at some points; the greatest challenge aren't the bosses, but the regular enemies.

As you can see, the game has lots of negative points that positive ones. The game is really bad, and must only be played by those hardcore Rainbow Six fans.

The graphics are tottaly ridiculous, with some bad designed textures and some ridiculous enemy design. They look blurry and even the Metal Gear Solid's (Konami, 1996) sentries look better than them. Your allies look blurry too, with almost no detail on their face or bodies. The grenade's explosion are tottaly ridiculous too. The environments are totally made of recicled textures, and they look extremely the same. They're very blurry with some very little detail in them. At least, the game's CG cutscenes are superb and extremely well done -- they're the only thing that assure a higher-than-3 graphical score.

The gameplay somehow follows the graphics' steps. It's totally broken and boring, since the game will be only "hold-R1-and-try-to-survive", due the game's near-impossible difficulty. The enemy sentries will not miss a single shot and will take you down severely quickly. You'll see yourself being killed by a single enemy many times, since somehow their weapons are a hundred times more powerful than yours. No matter how hard you shoot them, you'll never get rid of them quickly: apparently, your weapons just don't make effect. You just shoot, shoot, shoot and even so you'll end up dead and have to restart the whole level. This is extremelly annoying and will make you stop playing it in the game's half. The controls are extremelly dull and for a bit of comfort, you'll end up changing almost every setting in the options menu. The control responsiveness is also good, but don't expect miracles. While this may be a good point, the flaws manage to underpin it.

The sound is not totally bad, but it's not even close to good. Some of the game's effects are good, such as the helicopter's noises or the guns'. But some of them sound terribly bad, such as the explosions or some weapons' gunfire. The game has a good voice acting, but nothing MGS-like. Though some of the voices are extremelly annoying, Loiselle's voice seems to be the one that works the best. His french accent is very remarkable and the voice actor fits the character very good. Though, it seems that his voice is the only one worth hearing. The best thing you could want for this game is to play it in the lowest volume of your TV.

The game's solo campaign consists in 17 frustrating and repetitive levels, that will take you some 15-18 hours for you to complete it. Also, to break the monotony, each level has 5 hidden briefcases throughtout the level. But, it seems more like a chore than a real objective to find them. finding them gets you reward points, that you use to buy new weapons, new multiplayer characters or the level's concept art. Though none of these unlockables seems worthy enough the boring find-the-briefcases objective.

The offline multiplayer mode is nothing new or interesting: you only need to clear all the main levels with a parter. At least, when you die, you respawn and don't have to restart the whole level. This helps reducing the frustration level, but it doesn't get rid of them.

Running away from the game's roots, Rainbow Six Lockdown isn't worth buying, only if you're a big fan of the RS series. If I were you, I wouldn't even risk a rental, since you'll end up throwing money out of the window. Be smart and buy Rainbow Six 3 -- It's a lot better. If you have some patience to waste with this almost-impossible game, go ahead. Just don't blame yourself: this game is imenselly hard and sucks in almost every aspect.
