This is GRAW in name only, as there is nothing advanced about this version of Ghost Recon for the xbox.

Putting this game up next to the 360 version is, on one hand, completely unfair. GRAW on the 360 is an absolutely gorgeous game, and the new features it brings to the table are extremely well implemented and slick. It is, for lack of a better description, "next-gen". On the other hand, the comparison isn't entirely unreasonable because this Ghost Recon shares the same name and thus implies a similar experience. Well now that I've had time to play (and thoroughly enjoy) GRAW for the 360, I was curious to see what the xbox version had in store for xbox owners who don't have a 360 yet. As it turns out, not much... unless you consider ugly graphics, dumbed down gameplay, and a general lack of Ghost Recon-ness something.

The game immediately gets off on the wrong foot because well, it just doesn't look very good. The textures are basic, the colors are pretty washed out, the framerate is sketchy, and the animation is absolutely atrocious. The worst offender to the mood though, is the ridiculous "static" effect that has been lazily pasted over the screen. It's basically a really low-tech grain filter that looks like it was running on the Sega CD. Also, the Cross-com looks terrible here... the right hand window displays your CO's briefings and such, and it's just pre-rendered cutscenes, which look OK, but the left hand window looks absolutely abysmal, showcasing your ONE team member's view with low resolution and at about 2 frames per second (literally). Sometimes the game looks fine, but other times it looks significantly less than fine, especially this late into the xbox's life cycle. It looks a lot worse than it's predecessor on the xbox, Summit Strike.

The sound effects themselves are decent..., but there are some glitches that bring the sound down to mediocrity. The gunfire sounds fairly good, thankfully. The voice acting is pretty spotty though, with some decent performances mixed with some really forced ones. There's some solid orchestral music backing things up, just like in the 360 version. However, there is a bit of lag with the sound (for what reason I don't know), and it's kind of confusing at moments to hear some radio briefing that was supposed to happen about a minute previously... and it just feels really unpolished.

The gameplay itself has finally completely strayed from what Ghost Recon stands for, which is tactical action. There's action, and it has a decent enough "feel", with your weapons giving the appropriate amount of feedback and recoil. But decent firing mechanics don't make up for crappy gameplay, which is precisely what GRAW on the xbox offers up. The default run speed is actually super fast, surprisingly enough, which immediately gives it a run and gun feel. Contributing to that feeling is the fact that you have only one team mate. This is disappointing, and really doesn't do much to add to the feeling that your part of an elite team that the military sends in to un-feck things, but rather gives you the feeling that you're playing a crappy rendition of some saturday morning cartoon where one man armies are sent in to rescue presidents.

The A.I. isn't very impressive, and mostly serves as fodder for your bullets. In one particular instance, I ordered my team member to fire on a convoy over to my right. Instead, I caught him firing into a corner in the opposite direction, emptying an entire clip into NOTHING. It doesn't feel very tactical when your orders are blatantly ignored by incompetent friendly A.I. Further hampering the gameplay, is the fact that at a distance you really can't tell what your firing at, as everything is a big brown mess... and more often than not, you're just firing at red diamonds, which really doesn't make for compelling gameplay. The game is also missing the cover system from GRAW on the 360, and most of the movement options. You can't go prone, which is annoying, and you can't vault over obstacles, which is just stupid. You can peek around corners, but most of the time you don't really need to... as you're most likely better off just running up to the enemy to take them out at close range.

There is some "value" to the game based on the amount of content available. It's about as fully featured as any other xbox shooter, with single player, split screen, and xbox Live play. While the quality of the content is certainly suspect because of the generally boring gameplay, it's a bit better against other players, as they're more interesting targets. If for some reason you like this game, you'll find that it has some legs. IF you like it, which you probably won't.

Basically, this is similar to how Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory was ported to the DS, a system that just wasn't made to handle the game... and ended up being a totally worthless port. This game was not developed with the xbox in mind, and it really shows. From the half-assed way the Cross-com is handled, to the really lackluster graphics, to the broken A.I., and finally to the watered down gameplay. The game theoretically could have been pulled off on the xbox if it had been optimized for it from the get-go, but as it turns out it was just crammed poorly into the xbox to make a quick buck. The game is absolutely not comparable to the 360 version in terms of it's gameplay, or even it's predecessor, Summit Strike. The game has been watered down to the point where it really is just a run and gun game, but without the bells and whistles that make run and gun games work. Simply pu, this is the worst Ghost Recon game ever to be released, and most likely isn't worth any of your time. A morbidly curious rental at best.
