There's no point in finding a prime mate if you didn't do any challenges, right?

I just noticed even though I mated with a prime the next generation had no stat bonuses carry over. I think it's because I hadn't completed any challenges and didn't earn any new stat boosts since my previous mating. So unless I just wanted the added benefit of a bigger litter there's really no reason to seek out primes under these circumstances, correct? I don't want to botch my animal by mating with sub-standard females, but if there's no benefit then I might as well save time and take whoever.
Also I got an item, chicken breast, and it boosted my hunger gauge (I think +10) when I used it. I don't think any of that carried over either after breeding, but I think it's also because I did no previous challenges. I'm kind of confused how that works and when's the best time to use the chicken.

It's a percent chance even with a prime, though it is higher. But every time you mate the bonuses are reset, so yes, you need to do challenges with your current pack and then mate for the bonuses to possible permanently carry.
There is a point to a prime mate regardless-you get one extra pack member than average, so.

It's only temporary increase / valid for the current generation and doesn't carry over. I suggest to keep it for later on in the game towards A or S challenges.

It's not a % chance, it's a % of whatever bonuses you got. There's no random chance element to it, other than just whether you can get a good mate. If you got +10 life and use a prime mate, you will always permanently gain +5 life on that animal.
And yes, the bonus stats are from challenges. Mating allows you to keep a certain % of them permanently. So if you didn't complete any challenges, you get nothing. If you manage to get a prime mate, it's a good idea to try to complete as many challenges as you can before mating.
