The Most Unique PSP Offering To Date.

User Rating: 8.9 | Karakuri PSP
This game is as hard to describe as it is interesting to play. Tokobot blends the genres of platforming and puzzle-solving better than perhaps any game to date, making it a very strong puzzle-platformer.
The prehistoric Tokobots that help your character navigate through the world serve as both weapons and as tools. Players use them to attack enemies as well as to form ladders and bridges, and move objects. These elements are blended well on the PSP, and turn out better than they have on most console games.
The music is unique, and really helps to create an atmosphere for the game. The visuals are good, and the controls work well given the completely unique gameplay. There is a distinct lack of voice-acting, but this is understandable for a game that was obviously developed for Japanese audiences.
While I enjoy the game immensely, it is hard to compare it to others. It is a little like the Ape Escape series, in that it uses unique controls and characters, but I can’t really think of another game to compare it to. The puzzles can be frustrating for strict platformer fans, but for those who know what they’re getting into this game is perfect.
Some reviewers claim the game is a little on the short side. I feel that it's length is perfectly adequate, especially considering that this is a handheld offering.
The later stages of the game did get a little difficult, and I personally lost some interest in the title. The story did not make me feel an immediate need to complete the game, given my frustration with some of the puzzles. However, there is a good chance that I only gave up due to my lack of puzzle solving abilities, and cannot fairly knock the developers for my shortcomings.
I recommend this title to all PSP owners, just for the sake of the experience. This is the most unique game to date for the PSP, and could probably hold its own on the current console generation. Overall, it is a high quality presentation of a refreshingly new concept, and is definately worth at least a rental by all PSP owners.
