Yo, check it--Toejam and Earl is worth jammin' to. Word to your mother.

Strange as this game was, my friend and I LOVED playing it on his Sega Genesis. (He always had me playing the skinny one--Toejam) Something about two hip-hop aliens appealed to us, but it wasn't just that element alone--the gameplay mattered, and Toejam and Earl delivered on that. And it still does even today as a VC download for a new generation of gamers who can wonder what all the fuss was about back in the early 90s.

The goal is simple--help our two heroes find pieces of a spaceship to escape one of the most sinister environments in all the galaxy--planet Earth. You'll move through randomly-generated, top-down isometric worlds rife with crazy earthlings, environmental hazards and items that'll help you along the way--including tomatoes you use as weapons. Because of the randomness of the levels, you never know who, or what, you'll run into, so every playthrough is always a new and exciting experience. Best part is--you can play the game with a friend. Split-screen co-op means you don't have to be in the same screen to explore the ravages of Earth--you can collectively split up to make finding those spaceship parts a lot easier and, frankly, a lot more fun.

One of the most impressive things about Toejam and Earl is the hilarious sound samples. Humor is interspersed throughout in the game, including some tongue-in-cheek pop culture referendums and toilet humor that's sure to illicit a chuckle if not a full-blown guffaw. Controlling movement is a little sluggish, but not so much to break gameplay as a whole. And the music is appropriately hip-hop in nature.

Overall, Toejam and Earl is one of those gems that you have to play to appreciate. At 800 points, it's quite the bang for your buck. Not counting its two disappointing follow-ups, games like Toejam and Earl might not be made again anytime soon, so in the meantime, you owe it to yourself to kick it old-school with these hip-hop extraterrestial homeboys.
