While fun, TF does not live up to the hype or reinvent online FPS's

User Rating: 7 | Titanfall XONE

Forget all the E3 awards before this game was even released. Titanfall, while fun, does not live up to the hype or bring much new. It does a solid job of bringing game mechanics from other games together in to one as well as being pretty well balanced. No doubt, there is a lot of fun to be had with other friends while playing this game. The guns pack a punch, using your jetpack for double jumps and running across walls is easy to pull off, and controlling titans is as simple as playing a pilot. There are also plenty of relatively large maps that are well-designed and fun to move around in.

So why does this game seem like a letdown? Because it does not bring much new to the table. Mechs have been done in other games like Armored Core, the gunplay feels like any other online shooter you've played(think Call of Duty), the jetpacks and long jumps were in Halo: Reach, and the parkour moving was brought to the gaming world several years ago in Mirrors Edge. The nice thing is that all those mechanics have been brought together in one game, but none of it feels fresh or revolutionary. It also does not set up for true competitive multiplayer like Halo/Quake/Unreal Tournament/Call of Duty has. I've played a lot, and never have I ever felt like I was truly better than another player on the other team. This has a lot to do with the introduction of dumb AI that fill the maps. For me, that is the biggest reason I don't think this game will ever be known as a true competitive multiplayer.

Other tidbits: Graphics are fine, but do not look next-gen. There is also plenty of screen-tearing/framerate issues on the Xbox One version. I think all of the current game modes are fun but I think it would be a shame if Respawn decides to charge for future game modes. There needs to be more variety. Maybe some modes that don't have any stupid computer AI's? I guess time will tell.
