Ok first person shooting action........breaks no new ground.

Always on the quest for cheap entertainment and sleeper hits I stumble upon games such as Timeshift. This isn't a bad game, it also isn't a real good game either. The big gimmick that Timeshift has to offer is..........shifting time, go figure. Its a wonderful mechanic that can be very useful from a tactical standpoint. Say for instance you are overwhelmed by a number of enemies slowing things down is super handy. There are a handful of instances where this time shifting mechanic is used for puzzle elements as well. The problem is its just not used enough. There aren't enough clever puzzles or story devices that use the element of time control to ever make it feel truly viable. All too ofter I felt like I was wandering through yet another first person shooter and I just happened to be able to control elements of time as one of my side abilities. Most of the time I used it to get myself out of jams as opposed to being purely tactical. Timeshift feels very much like FEAR from a gameplay standpoint. The weapons handle well and the shooting mechanics feel solid and accurate. The controls are easy to deal with and always felt sure. The visuals are fair, but far from spectacular. Sometimes things looked a little too dull for my taste. I like dreary atmosphere as long as it has character. In the early levels of this game I enjoyed the level design and atmosphere that it presented, but the game got progressively more boring as time went on. The music isn't worth mention. The sound effects were ok for the most part. The game's difficulty was about right. As I said before there were times when I had to use time manipulation to bail myself out of a hairy situation. The story is useless and confused, but I'm usually in these games for the action anyways. The concept behind this game has more potential than what came about in the final product.

Final Thoughts: Fairly entertaining FPS action that won't bore you to death or blow you away. Could have been more.
