How RPG gaming is meant to be.

Remember SSI's Gold Box Series?

If not, read no further because 'old balls' here is about to rant.

CD Projekt's 'The Witcher' might not be an instant classic like the aforementioned gems, but it was (is) a fantastic entry into a gaming segment that was in dire need of revitalization.

Sapkowski's concept is simple : a Witcher is a monster hunter. This lends itself liberally and smoothly to a video-game. The game is powered by a modified Aurora engine (Bioware), which translated nicely for the dev's game world. The environments are wonderfully executed- the game feels gritty and dark. Smooth combat animations and effects create a compelling atmosphere that can really suck you in given a chance. The voice-overs are good, but the dialogue isn't always consistent in style. The plot can be plodding at times, but there are plenty of extras, side-quests and mini-games that are very well implemented. Overall, the game is very technically sound, and very fun. If the thin combat and alchemy had more depth - this would almost certainly be a contender for my favorite game ever. I should also mention the pixel-porn is rather poorly implemented.

The original release was cursed with glitches and long loading times. These issues were patched, and an Extended Edition was released by the developer to improve upon many of the issues that were voiced by the gaming community. This is the type of developer we should be supporting people! CD Projekt Red really seem to care about a quality experience.

As a long time RPG'er - Bioware has held a special place in my gaming cabinet since Baldur's Gate. The recent disappointment that is Dragon Age 2 has caused me some concern for my favorite developer.

Could CD Projekt Red be the last great hope for PC RPG gaming fans? I think they have something special, and I pre-ordered my copy of the Witcher II in December. If you love PC RPG's like I do, show your support!
