I'm in chapter two and I have yet to upgrade any of my equipment. Are there any items I should be trying to get?

Excellent Leather Jacket. 5000 gold. Buy from Order Armorer or Dwarven Blacksmith.
Harvall steel sword. Find it on a corpse in the north part of the swamp, surrounded by wyverns.

The earliest you can get an upgraded silver sword is chapter 3: buy a sun rune from Thaler in chapter 2, complete 'memory of a blade' quest (earth rune), and ask for an earth rune as a reward for the chapter 3 fistfight quest.
