The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Preview - Key Characters

By Staff

We've got a set of character-specific trailers to get you up to speed on the many faces in The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.

Developed by CD Projekt Red and released in 2007, The Witcher had you take control of Geralt of Rivia, a "witcher" who excels at hunting monsters. The game was based on a book series of the same name by Polish fantasy author Andrzej Sapkowski and has since amassed a cult following of loyal fans. The game's sequel, The Witcher 2, is now upon us, and hot on the heels of its release we have a plethora of character-specific trailers to give you a who's who in the Witcher universe.

Vernon Roche

Vernon Roche is a specialist in the Temerian military and one of the new non-player characters you'll be able to recruit in TW2. With his gruff demeanor, Roche forms the "bad cop" half of his and Geralt's antagonistic bad cop/bad cop relationship. We got a chance to see him in action (though he wasn't in our party) during our last hands-on session with the game. Roche was ruthless on the battlefield and, when compared with the rest of the cast, seems to be the most well-rounded of the four.

Triss Merigold

Making her return in TW2, Triss Merigold is a powerful sorceress and one of Geralt's primary love interests in the original game. Her healing magic makes her a valuable asset in any battle, and her offensive abilities are just as potent. Along with Vernon Roche, Merigold was one of the primary characters we encountered in the game's opening scenes during our latest preview. Suffice it to say, this redhead's affections for the witcher certainly haven't waned since last we saw her.

Zoltan Chivay

It seems that Zoltan's plans to live happily ever after with his fiancee have fallen through since the previous game. However, his loss is our gain since we are more than happy to welcome back our dwarven friend to a life of excitement and adventure alongside Geralt. Zoltan is a master craftsman and a reliable combatant, and his martial prowess fills the group's need for a sturdy, frontline brawler.

Iorweth

The elf Iorweth is a newcomer in TW2. He's a skilled hunter and tracker, and his abilities may be able to rival those of even the legendary witcher. While the others prefer to fight with swords and sorcery, Iorweth relies on his deadly accuracy with a bow to fell his enemies. He is a self-proclaimed hater of humans and isn't afraid to share his views with (force them onto) those around him. Whether he will become a friend or a foe has yet to be seen.

If you're already playing TW2, be sure to check out our game guide, which includes a walkthrough to help get you started on your quest.

Can you just refer to it as W2? TW2 reminds me of the let down that was two worlds 2. I though i had repressed that memory but you just brought it back.

I do hope this stays exclusive, but I really dislike it when people talk about PC gaming as a separate breed. That *is* elitism, plain and true.

One the best video games for this year! The guys who say this game is crap are just frustrated because they can't play the game on their consoles!

Bad voice acting?? what?? Are we watching stuff from the same game? All great games attract haters I guess. And its safe to say these videos are very poor quality compared to the actual game. Im running it on high spec and it looks fantastic (There is an ultra spec too but its too much for my computer).

@paladin9992 I didnt judge the game , i judge the videos of the game. And its FACT facial expressions, graphics in overall , voice acting and surroundings textures are bad for a 2011 game.... Except if this is some sort of beta and we will see an entirely different game than this video shows us. PS: I doubt you would say the same ( poor guys , play the game then comment , never judge before try it ) to people that actually praise the game would you? I guess not.

some people do not like the trailer, said that the voice acting is terrible... leads the game is bad too poor guys... never judge without try it PLAY THE GAME!!! Then comments

I don't like the look of it. It has that shiny orange-ish look most console games have, and it's completely unrealistic and ugly to me.

Im not impressed with graphics , nor animations , nor surroundings textures and worse of all.. VOICE ACTING...is terrible.. If this game will fail to bring deep RPG elements and solid story i cant see how will score more than 8. EDIT: I saw the first video , second was better but still

OHHHHHHH!!!!! Man look at the facial expressions.......... Thats sick man. For a game releasing in 2011..... well i guess that we PC guys have seen better... Gameplay will have to cover that seriously.... :((

Love the console fans here whining. Poodlejumper hit the nail RIGHT on the head. No offense to all you console kiddies, but the leave the real gaming to the pros.

@caccyducky NEVER NEVA NEVUH! PC users barely get any PC exlusive games. I'd like to play L.A Noire or Red Dead but no console exlusive. I hope this stays on PC only.

@dhollis007 When is the last time a little nudity killed anyone? We're big boys and girls. We can take it. In the event that some parent has a problem with the nudity I can both recommend looking at the parental warnings beforehand and not recommend classical art. The latter might destroy them!

Triss gets naked alot...which helps because her voice acting is horrible

It's definitely not censored. Triss is not censored in the slightest at the beginning of the game. This game is something epic, nudity aside.

Love the console fans here whining. You guys/gals get EVERYTHING ELSE first if not exclusively. Let me repeat that: YOU GET/GOT EVERYTHING ELSE. You get God of War, Drakes Fortune, Resident Evil, Halo, Gears of War, etc...and there's a few there I REALLY want to play. When we point this out we get attacked. When I point out that I as a working professional and family man do not have the money to buy a $500 blueray player I get attacked. You even get our best games DUMBED DOWN and SHORTENED (Dragon Age 2?) so they can be ported out to you all so you can play them in a week and then move on to your next Call of Duty clone and forget about them. When we point out that these games are truly dumbed down and shortened we get called "afraid of change" and "elitists". This gem is ours. Buy a PC and learn why we love PC gaming.

Seeing the reviews is leaving me gutted. I have the 1st one for my laptop and loved it but don't think my M11x is powerful enough to run the witcher 2, so alas, I will have to have the poorer console version if and when it comes out. Waaaaaah.

This game shows why PC is the best platform to develop for. I just bought the first one, but I have already ordered this from Amazon for when I finish the first one. I am not an RPG fan, but Mass Effect 2 and this series have really dragged me in! Love the stories of these two franchises.

Still downloading my Steam copy... freaking banana internet. =/ But, you guys check some reviews? The lowest score so far was. 9.0, yes, 9.0, and already two 10!!!!!!! And Bioware "newf**s" trying to mess up with the score in Metacritic... well, GOTY!!!! ( imo ) And again, who pirate this game WILL BURN IN HELL! ( yeah, I yelled, deal with it, pirates! )

I'm still playing the first one. Bought it last Dec but never installed it till a week ago. Very nice looking game with its own atmosphere and mood. The combat is very weird at first, but you get used to it. Part 2 looks awesome. You can tell the developers put a lot of time into crafting this game.

Games Radar give 100/100 witcher 2 Truly a labor of love, this amazing sequel fortifies the foundations laid down by a flawed classic and creates a brilliant masterpiece. Visceral combat, dizzying player customization and a truly immersive story all come together to create one of the best role-playing experiences of the year.
