Short version: DayZ sucked at launch. Minecraft sucked at launch. The new model developing games these days allows it.
The problems a lot of people are complaining about this game are the same problems DayZ faced the day it "launched" and they don't seem to understand that. The difference between DayZ and WarZ is that DayZ was started with a small but dedicated fanbase, and was a MOD which let all the bugs and problems be excused where WarZ is a full game and people for some reason expected more(I'll explain why you shouldn't expect so much at launch anymore). The folks at Hammerpoint Interactive and their publishers probably didn't expect the bad reception but honestly, I don't think they could have.
With Kickstarter and Steam Greenlight tons of games that are in beta or even alpha are being sold to the open public. I think H.I. expected a warmer reception with their unfinished product and honestly I don't blame them. People shouldn't get so worked up about this and say this is a horrible game because it isn't finished yet. Thankfully the industry is changing so a game is no longer this thing that people will either love or hate, it can be something that grows and changes depending on the customer.
I do see a lot more games trying to use this model. It probably won't reach over to AAA titles but this game is definitely not a AAA title. H.I. is a small developer and a lot of these small developers are going to probably use this method to get more games out. The worse thing that could really happen is the problems a lot of popular games face: that since 90% of the time people want to sell as many units as possible they take recommendation from the majority which end up hurting the game and I can definitely see this game doing something similar. H.I. didn't do anything wrong, what they're doing is a good model for smaller developers and they didn't make a bad game because they didn't really finish making anything yet.
