There are many other First Person Shooters to distract you from what you should be playing - Doom. Any First Person Shooter - Call of Duty, Halo, Crysis, Rage, Bioshock, Duke Nukem, Metroid Prime, Goldeneye, Quake, Half Life 2, Battlefield, Medal of Honor, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, they all trace their routes back to Doom. Wolfenstein did come first - but there was just something about Doom that really caught people's attention and made the genre what it is. I'll get on with the review.

Gameplay: Doom is old school FPS. No complicated gun mechanics, just shoot. The game reloads for you. The level design has puzzle elements, so getting keycards etc. is included. The aim? Find the exit room. Basically, get the hell out of there. You collect ammo, and shoot demons. Its dead simple. Its a good map (get it? cheesy pun :D). There are also weapons you can collect and use and five difficulties to test your strength on.

Graphics: Now the way I do things for classics like Doom is not how good the graphics are, but if they are playable today. Back in the day these were top notch, and it is extremely playable by today's standards. The game runs smoothly and hopefully you can play it on high :D. If you want some old school goodness check out the Chocolate Doom source port but if you want superior graphics, Doomsday Engine is the one!

Sound: Doom has undoubtedly great music. One of my favourite features are the screams of enemies when you hit them with a shotgun. Sometimes you might here the same song in two levels, but the music is good so I don't really mind.

Story: Your commander is a stupid idiot so he asks you to fire on civilians, but you decline his orders and assault him, and because of that you are sent to Mars and work with the UAC. But then demons flow out of some inter dimensional teleporters and everyone else dies but you. You go to the mars moons and hell to kill some demons.

The reason the story is so vague because at the time YOU were supposed to be the marine.

Value: The Ultimate Doom not only has three awesome episodes of imp slaughtering, but also comes with an extra episode for hardened veterans. Be warned. You can get this on Steam for £5.99 so you should really get it.

Verdict: Now Doom is a game that you have to play whether you a 8, 16 or 32 (get my joke?). It is simply amazing. Some source ports include multiplayer compatibility (Chocolate Doom, Doomsday, Skulltag etc.). So hop into steam and get it. You might as well play it before you go to hell anyway - it would be best if you know your way around!
