This game might be entertaining for a visit to the past, but otherwise, a below average Beat-'Em-Up

User Rating: 4.5 | The Tick SNES
Based off the TV show, The Tick, this Super Nintendo game leaves it's mark as a average beat-'em-up. I remember watching the TV as a kid, but now, I remember nearly nothing about it. Playing the game didn't clue anything in either. It is extremely repetitive. The nature of the beat-'em-up are fight a bunch of goons, boss battle, rinse wash repeat. But this game, just feels destroys that process. Instead of progressing quickly through goons and battling bosses, 99% of this game are against the same goons. Ninjas the first half or so of the game. Only 5 types of ninjas, for about 10-15 levels, possibly more. All have a weapon, but as soon as you hit them with either your punch of kick (all the moves besides a call in of Arther the bird/guy) they drop their weapon, and are left trying to chop you. Some take only one combo, to defeat, others two or three. But the thing that gets me, is how many of them you fight each level. The basic idea of finding them, beating them, then follow the flashing "GO" works very well within this genre. But in The Tick, I found myself beating up countless goons between each "GO" and instead of enjoying it, I just wanted it to end. Then, after close to 20 levels, maybe even more, I didn't really keep count, I fought only 4 bosses, and I can barely call them that. Instead of epic boss battle like most games in this genre, these bosses were just cheap and easy to beat. One thing I thought was really stupid was that you can't unleash any combos on a boss. One hit, and then freeze for a second, and then hit you back. They can kill you with about 4 hits, and all they can take is 1 at a time. The boss battle are supposed to be a change of pace, but instead feel like even more of a chore than fighting the same goons over and over again. There are some things in this game that I forgot to mention, but none are redeeming qualities worth saying. This game might be entertaining for a visit to the past, but otherwise, a below average Beat-'Em-Up.
