The "throw party" ability allows your Sims to easily entertain large numbers of their neighbours, boosting their social needs and maintaining the friends count needed for career advancement. Many of the new additions to the house furnishings are very handy when trying to keep numbers of Sims entertained. In a well designed house, whole groups of Sims will now be able to find some sort of collective fun (think mechanical bull riding) on their own, saving you from the micromanagement nightmare of catering to each of your guests' needs yourself.
Bottom line: House Party makes maintaining friendships with a large number of people much easier than ever before while allowing for social interactions on truly massive scale. A worthy addition for even casual The Sims fans.
