The Saboteur is a pleasant surprise in the over-populated WW2 genre. Real Score: 8.6

First off, if you are a fan of the Godfather games, stop reading and go pick up The Saboteur as this game was made for you. I myself am I huge fan of the Godfather games and found the Saboteur to be easy to pick up and play. The mechanics and everything are very similar to those in the Godfather games. That being said the Saboteur puts you in the shoes of Sean Devlin. An Irish car tuner who ends up helping the French Resistance in WW2. Now if you are thinking "Oh God not another World War Two game" just hold on a second becuase this game is totally different than a large amount of WW2 games. For starters this game takes place in an open world Paris where you can do whatever it is that you want. Do you want to climb to the top of the Eifel Tower? You can in this game. If you take the time to realize all that this game has to offer you will get lots of playtime out of it and you will enjoy exploring the open city.

The gameplay in the Saboteur is very straightforward, but in a good way. You are in Paris working for the resitance and you need to help them out while fulfilling your own personal vendetta. The cool thing about the Saboteur is that it brings in a noir style feel. The areas of Paris that you have liberated from the Nazi's are beautiful and they look like the Paris that is shown on the television. Areas of the city that are under Nazi control are in black, white and red, very similar to that of the Sin City graphic novels and movie. This is a great aspect of the game becuase as you start to drive around the city you will not want to see any areas of black and white on the map becuase you have seen the wonders that the liberated areas of Paris have to offer. The game is linear and over the top when you are taking place in indoor shootouts and it is openended and experimental when you are outside trying to find the best way to take down a Nazi general. This game has lots of Assassins Creed elements as climbing and hanging out on rooftops will be something that you spend a lot of time doing. The cool thing is, is that a large majority of the outdoor missions will take a couple times, because find the perfect way to get in and out isn't always the obvious way, although in the long run both are perfectly acceptable ways to get the job done (one just might be a little harder).

The gunplay in this game is very over the top and not at all what I expected it to be like. It makes sense that this game is published by EA because so much about the story and the over the top gunplay is reminiscent of the earlier Medal of Honor games when you were a one man army waging war on the Nazi's and helping out the French resistance at the same time. The driving could use a little work, but its something that is expected with the old fashion cars.

The graphics in the Saboteur are very good. The environments whether they are in full color or just black and white are top notch. Another similarity to the Godfather games is that the explosions in this game are very good as well. THe only thing keeping the graphics from being a higher score is that the character models are good but they are kind of lacking as there are a few rare cutscnes that show what the game is capable of. The sound department is very good as well. The voice acting is one of the best things about the Saboteur and the gunplay and explosions sound great as well.

So the Saboteur is definately a game that I feel everyone should play. I don't want to get too much into the story but the ending of the game will leave you speechless and make you wish will all of your heart that there will be a second game. That being said the driving mechanics are somewhat poor and the character models aren't amazing. The game takes about 10 hours to beat all the main missions and side missions on the regular difficulty. There isn't any multiplayer but there are a lot of collectables and Nazi's to kill. If you like me are into WW2 but sick of all the FPS that are constantly released each year the Saboteur will offer you something new and fun. Not to mention it's the closest we will ever get to an Inglorious Basterds game.
