If you don't become a Punisher fan after playing this game, then you should try something else...

User Rating: 8 | The Punisher PS2

When I first found out about this title I was a bit skeptical about Marvel-based games, especially after playing the PS2 version of X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

But, after playing, I just fell in love with this title. But now some facts about the game (some of them might be spoilers, but not major ones):

The plot is based on both the 2004 Punisher movie starring Thomas Jane (which I absolutely loved: if you ask me, Thomas Jane will always be the perfect Punisher, watch the short-movie "The Punisher: Dirty Laundry" and see what I mean) and the 2000 comic "The Punisher: Welcome Back, Frank" by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, with several cameos of other Marvel characters. An excellent mix that gave this title an exciting series of twists as long as the story goes on.

The game mechanics remids me a lot of Devil My Cry: go through each level, kill anyone who stands in your way and score as many points as you can by killing your enemies with style and in the most brutal and gory way possible. Of all the various features of the game, the interrogation system is a very nice touch, because it will help you recover some health for each enemy you make talk, a thing that will surely come in handy, especially at the highest difficulties. In short: the more brutal you are with your enemies, the more rewarding (in terms of points, health recovered and extras unlocked) this game will be.

It may become a bit repetitive, like all shoot-em-up games, but if you are obsessed with achieving 100% completion it will keep you busy for hours and hours trying to win all the medals, complete all the challenges and unlock all the extras (in-game artworks, flashbacks, comic book covers...).

A thing I don't like is the lack of weapon customization in the game: all the weapons available look cool and powerful, but you can't modify their aspect, their accuracy, ammo capacity and damage dealt, meaning that you'll need to carefully choose the weapons you want to use in each level. Another thing I didn't like was the lag of some levels: the game starts freezing and it may cause you some problems, especially while dealing with bosses or taking heavy fire by a large group of enemies.

In the end, I firmly recommend this game to all those players who love unconventional heroes and want to find out what's the difference between justice and punishment!
