"Planet Goldin. You have just arrived at the starport of the major settlement in this arid planet. As you walk towards the market you are approached by someone who has a task for you. The job is simple, but pays well. You must find the leader of a gang and bring something from him. Before you leave the city you stop by a merchant to buy some upgrades and ammo for your favorite rifle, some health packs and a canister of fuel. You store everything in the trunk of your dune buggy and head out to the wasteland.

After some time among large dunes and strange wildlife, you reach your destination. Some bandits guard the entrance to a cave. With the mounted gun on your buggy you easily dispose of the bandits, loot them and store the goods in your vehicle. After that, you enter the cave and fight your way to the leader. You kill him, take what you are supposed to bring back and loot everyone you killed.
When everything is loaded you head back to the city. The sunshine has gone and the dark night makes it very hard to see where you are going. Suddenly the buggy stops. You are out of gas! You get the fuel canister from the trunk and refuel the buggy. You also carry a spare tire in case you have a flat.

After you reach the city you deliver the item to your employer and receive the reward. Then, its time to sell some stuff you aquired to a local merchant. The important stuff, like health packs and ammo, you decide to keep, so you head towards the Spaceport. There, your ship is ready for departure. You board your ship and ask the computer about the status of the systems. Armor and shields are ready to go. You decide to store some things in your ship's hold, so you cross the different decks and get to your storage unit. After that, its time to head over to the cockpit and sit in the command chair. Takeoff.

Now you're in space, orbiting Planet Goldin. You access your starmap and plan a course to the space station Galileo, orbiting the Planet Gli on the Clatz system. You check your fuel level and discover you have enough to preform the hyperjump. When you arrive at the destination some raiders attack you. You suffer some shield damage and take a few hits in your hull but you dispose of the pirates. After that you approach the Galileo and dock.

Once inside, you exit your ship and try to find a mechanic to repair it. While he's working, you head to the bar where someone is looking for a mercenary to hire. The job seems simple. Somewhere on Gli is a man you have to find. Before you leave the station you buy an upgrade for your ship's shields, so that next time the pirates won't make such a dent on your hull.

You undock, approach the Planet and descend on one of the bases. This planet is different from Goldin. It is covered by a lush forest inhabited by large spiders and other animals. You head of the base and track the man you are looking for."

This is "The Precursors". It is a very ambitious game that tries to do what Battlecruiser tried and failed. The game offers first person shooting, vehicle driving and shooting, space warfare, looting, trading and character build up. You advance in level and get to select perks, much like Fallout, only the perks are a lot less.

The game takes place in a Galaxy with 9 star systems, each with a few planets, moons and space stations. You can only land on six planets, but each one is very detailed with different animals, insects, plants, weather and day/night cycles. In each planet there are different factions. Your actions will determine your relation towards those factions.

There are various types of weapons, including organic ones where you feed a weid creature and make it spew dangerous materials that cause damage.
In space you can participate in escort missions, space fights, races and other missions. You can attack trade ships and become a pirate. You can board ships and bring the fight to the crew. You can mine asteroids for minerals.

The downside of the game is that it has a lot of bugs. The game is russian and the english version has a lot of quirks, from small allthough sometimes funny botched translations to really annoying sound issues. However, there is a dedicated community that has already released several unoficial patches that greatly improve this game.

There is a main questline, but there are several side quests that bring that "free-roam" feel to the game. Now don't expect to find a polished title like X3:Reunion or Terran Conflict. But the options that the game provide truly make this a very interesting game.
