This is not a fair review, you have to really play the game to feel it.

It is not a game for casual players, it's not hardcore either, but it's a game that calls for a bit of thinking in terms of gameplay, for the strategy that is required in combat, an example of this is the explosive goblins part mentioned in the video review, where you should - obviously - used ranged attacks and by all means stay away from the wretched creatures.

The best feature of the game is how you have to play as a team to progress through the levels, which makes the multiplayer really fun. Each character has it's own role, strengths and weaknesses. Every time you play a different character you have to adapt your strategy and gameplay, because you should not jump in the middle of a group of raging Orcs with a "fragile-oh-don't-touch-me-i'm-a-healer" Elven Loremaster and attack them from far with a "god-damn-hard-as-stone" Dwarf Champion, while the "leader-stereotype-fast-striking" Dúnadain Ranger keeps looting the corpses... But even though your hero has already a base defined, it is up to you to build his skills with a big number of combinations. What this game really says is "DON'T BE STUPID", think about your combat role, help your friends and share the loot - which is very rewarding.

Concerning the game story-line, it's not that really strong but it's fun. It has that cliché element that most role-playing games have, but we're talking about Tolkien's universe, it IS the basis from where all medieval-fantasy elements come from. If you're not acquainted with The Lord of The Rings trilogy, it might be a little strange/dull plot, but it gets really interesting when you have read the books, or watched the movies. In my vision this it's a more fan-centered game, but still, a really good game - the best of the LotR franchise - that kept me hours straight playing.

Although it has a few flaws, as not having the option to save your progress in-game and not being able to switch characters while playing a mission these are not THAT impairing, but to me the most frustrating thing about it was how short the game is, it could have a few more side quests, more maps, etc. It also fell short of NPC's I think.

ANYWAY - it's always great to destroy and mutilate hordes of rampaging Orcs and Goblins and that share amount of Trolls, loot and pile caves and enemy outposts followed by great graphics, from very good character models to beautiful landscapes. I do not regret playing it, it was in fact, a really interesting journey through the world of LotR that made me want to read all the other book such as The Hobbit and The Children of Húrin.

Play It. Enjoy it.

idiot reviewer that's for sure. That sappers part made me question his intelligence, so you got killed by running headlong into a part where you are supposed to use ranged weapons. What an idiot.

Just finished this game, although i cant comment on multiplayer, i had none of the issues that reviewer talked about on normal diff, sappers died way before they got anywhere near me and you wont get constantly knocked down if you actually time your dodge's correctly instead of mashing the attack keys. Def worth picking up if you like hack and slash games especially now that its really cheap.

stupid complains... I remember that LOTR: Return of the King also had some frustrating moments, like the trolls knocking you to the ground and such, but it got like an 8.0. LOTR: War in the North "complains" are basicly the same in this dumb review... and yet it gets a 6.0? Dumb reviews are dumb.. yes the game is a hack'n'slash, and yes some elements are frustrating, but overall it's a nice game... It's more like a 7.5, worst that ROTK but better than a dumb 6.0 pull out of the a$s...

Wow, the reviewer ripped this game to shreds on what sounded like simple issues (like it was hard, checkpoints weren't very frequent, the coop glitches misleadingly) but NOTHING that sounded gamebreaking at all. You'd assume by the way the game was portrayed here that there wasn't a single good thing about it... this review was a list of the technical issues and opinions of bad moments had by the reviewer. But... nothing about the game at all besides a brief overview of the plot. Is there an actual review somewhere that has something to say about the actual game? I'd like to see it.

@wavelength121 Do you need glasses? How is posting MY opinion considered flooding threads with personal attacks? I wanted to hear some of the positives from the game instead of so many negatives. That isn't too much to ask. Asking more from reviewers isn't that bad. So before you start trolling peoples comments, maybe you should think before you speak.

I just don't get it. Seriously, almost every so-called "problem" with this game was exactly what they praised so highly in dark souls: tough enemies that take actual strategy to take down, having to replay hard sections when you die, etc. At least this game has a real storyline with decent voice acting. Geez, Gamespot, pick a standard and stick to it.

thx for the review.... im looking for a coop online to play and the cons of this game are things that i can easily overlook. especially this week that is 35 (used) 39(new) in gamestop... thx That said, i have to point out, your (the) review is great and everyone is entitle to an opinion, but did I understand that right? Part of the critic for co-op online is that when friends that are not as advanced on the quest join, the difference in lvls is felt... really? That in my book, is GOOD. In rpg(and rpg--likes), less hours playing>>> no advance>> no kills>>> no points >> less power. Is Fair that you feel weaker/stronger when compared. If not wouldn`t it be a critic that advancing do not seems to make a difference and you don`t feel the satisfaction of more points/more power/better weapons??? I loved borderland for that very same reason, lvl 10s can join lvl 20s but you know you are helping those (and only did it with friends, no random ppl that can`t listen), it even gave it, an extra mission kind of feel  enjoy..

As a die-hard Tolkien fan, I'll get this game just for that sake. But once the price drops. I'm not spending 60 euros for a game, no sir.

What isn't fair is that they can't make a good LotR game. The movies ranged from near perfect to perfect. The Hobbit and Rings books hide a lot of potential to come up with an alternative epic story. Add Silmarillion and you have an even bigger goldmine of references and story points. To this day Howard Shore's majestic music gives me chills and brings an occasional tear to the eye. And still, you get these average, boring, low bar, wannabe big budget games that every hack developer can grind out in 12 months. I wish just for once they could put out a proper game that gives deserved justice to the Tolkien lore, instead of giving us just the scraps.

Could anyone @ me replying on whether they have experienced significant bugs w/ the PS3 version? I read about a bug early on that made it so you couldn't complete/finish the game once you got to an area near the end. Any advice would be much appreciated as I have a copy and am about to beat Dark Souls (finally)... Should I play this or something else next? Thanks.

@Gelugon_baat Before you start annoying me, I would like to inform you that I follow Carolyn and have already read that blog post. I understand her point, but this review just doesn't seem accurate to me at all. Also, her blog post talks about everyone being entitled to their opinion, so stop trying to prove people wrong with it. I am entitled to disagree with her review just as everyone else is and even if reviews are meant to increase your understanding of others opinions I may still lose respect because of it.

@Gelugon_baat Not to reinforce your view 'after the purchase', to identify reviewers who review games roughly the way you'd expect them to be reviewed, so you can trust their ratings in the future. Reviews are just opinions, and we read reviews to understand a person's opinion on the game in order to 'make a purchasing decision'. What good does it do a reader to read a review of a random reviewer they know nothing about? None. Once you have a handful of reviewers you trust, you have a good chance of understanding how much you may, or may not, enjoy the gaming experience for a new game.

Pfff, what a load of s**t. So they game gets a 6 because its too hard? While games like castlevania are prized amongst gamers even though its very cheap at times..

UnRelentingAlly

Well considering the way they have been reviewing games recently a 6 seems about right. From the way they talked about it though this game seems like it should be a 7 at least. They nitpicking.

wwlettsome
wwlettsome

Based on the complaints in the review I'm unclear as to why this got a 6 for a score. There have been a lot of games that suffer from similar issues (all at the same time) and have been given 8's or above. I don't think every game needs an 8 or 9 for a score but this one seems oddly low.

dnarox

wow the person who played the game in that review really sucked. i mean c'mon..if a bunch of exploding orcs come at u..u dont just stand their..u get back and use long range attacks. gamespot really needs to review thier quality control.

Carolyn's review seems pretty bang-on to me. A game dripping with potential, ruined by lack of finesse.

SnuffDaddyNZ

demon souls, apparently difficult, gets goty, this game has inconsistent difficulty, and that makes it a 6/10? more consistency in reviews please, still haven't forgiven KVO for giving mass effect an 8 because he sucked at killing thresher maws...

bob1117
bob1117

Who is the guy reading narrating the review? His voice is too nasal and way annoying. I know it's a five minute video game review, but find someone with a pleasant voice. Just walk down the street and audition homeless people. You'll find someone with a better voice in ten minutes.

KnightSparda
KnightSparda

@valdarez : Totally agree. Is better to hear what the gamespot reviewers have to say about the game, rather than looking at their ratings

KnightSparda
KnightSparda

Ok, what she said is, game is pretty good, few annoyances along the way that make it quite difficult and sometimes frustrating. And that means 6/10? :|

MrSelf-Destruct
MrSelf-Destruct

I gotta say, while I agree that the kamikaze sappers are frustrating, they're no problem at all if you just shoot them like you're supposed to. I didn't have any of them blow up in my face. And fighting trolls is not hard at all. Their attacks are simple to dodge as long as you're paying attention. I got knocked down once. That was it. I've beat the snot out of everyone I've encountered since. Basically, what I'm saying is that, as long as you are good at this type of game, the frustrations mentioned here are pretty much nonexistent.

@LtReviews The game is quite long and there is splitscreen. I think its a great game so far, definately worth it for the co-op experience.

@cronosblaster Honestly don't see how Dark Souls received a 9.5 on the site. Believe it was over hyped. Kevin-V writes solid reviews, but I find that I either end up rating his reviews down a point if they are over 9's, or up a point if they are in the 7 range as his enjoyment level / unhappy level with games is a bit more exuberant than my own which is what I believe is tipping the scale. Carolyn's reviews are a bit closer to my own ratings usually only a .5 adjustment or so. Tom McShea's ratings are nigh identical to how I rate games, but the reasons and conclusions of how he arrives at the scores are a bit off. Take away is you need to find a site, get to know the reviewers, and then learn who reviews games and whose ratings trend towards how you would rate a game. Then, and only then, can you truly place any value in or give weight to a review. Personally enjoy reading all of the reviewers listed above, even though our ratings may not perfectly align. In addition, because they have a different view point, if I don't quite understand why they said something, or described something in a certain manner, or even left something out entirely, they've all been nice enough to answer / respond whether through the message system or on the comments section of the videos. That's the added plus that makes the reviews even more trust worthy for this gamer. :)

@mirhagon Where in the seven hells did that come from??? Christ, it's an honest opinion! I'm sure there are books where you dislike the author's writing style, so you don't read them. Movies where you don't like the dialoge, so you don't watch them. I just don't like the sound of her voice. That's it! I'm not belittling Carolyn in any way! And do you know what else Carolyn's reviews are a becon for? Jerks like you who look to pick a fight where there isn't one.

@triple_b2k "Both sides"? There aren't two sides, there is the reviewer's opinion, and that's it. You want the opinion of some untrained, unprofessional d-bags go surf the forums. The fact is LOTR (lol couldn't hear you back there in the early 1900s) War in the North is a lackluster game, and it looks annoying to boot. Carolyn gave you plenty of stuff to get excited about if you are dead-set on buying (wooo characters from the books, nerd squeal) so do us all a favor and stop flooding threads with your personal attacks on GS.
