Played both versions of the game and I think that *absolutely* the Gamecube version is the superior game.

The Wii controls really do nothing other than break the immersion.  I don't want to have to think about how I'm controlling a game, I don't want to be reminded that I *am* controlling a game, I just want it to work.

One thing that I would say though, it didn't do much to capture the fear of the first game, the enemy designs in particular never looked like anything other than pulled right out of a game for 5-year-olds, ballooned and clumsy and childish, never threatening, and never had anything like the Shadow Temple opponents or the Dead Hand and certainly never came close to the tragic haunting magic of Majora's Mask.

Aside from that, this game really was spectacular and did everything it could do recapture the magic of the original 3D game.  The result is really breathtaking and will stay with you for a long time after you finish.

Really what I'm saying is, you'll yearn to play this game again for nostalgic reasons the same as you did with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

i played this game first on gamecube and then went out and bought it for wii... i preferred the gamecube version. as a fan i prefer the "canon" version of the game (Link being left handed, Hyrule being NOT mirrored). I had problems on the wii version due to him spin attacking when i wanted to do a sheild bash. or slow less responsive sword swinging. The pros however on the wii are being able to aim using the wii mote which works perfectly.

I own it and recommend it...they had this one out for the Wii as well, but I never played that version....and I heard this one is the better (and less tiring) one to get....if you want motion control...then go for Skyward Sword which I also own and recommend

As of now I'm playing this game, trying to beat it for the first time (I've played it before but back when I was only in middle school so my attention span and consideration for a game such as this was not the best) and this reviewer is correct.  There needs to be technical advances in the Zelda franchise before it gets lost in the past.  I'm playing this game alongside the Mass Effect series, and in the 5 years that game has been out, it has evolved into a fine tuned masterpiece.  The Zelda franchise is great, and will stay that way but for it to become the piece of art meant for this new generation of gaming it needs to make technical advances.

good lord, this reviewer says a lot that amounts to a little positive.

@noah364 Well people need to just suck it if they don't like voice actors, as long as link is still silent then that's alright. The reviewers right, its a complete drag to have to read through the text all the time, im sure nintendo of all video game companies could good enough effort in getting good voice actors

I enjoyed this game quite a bit...but I felt it was really, really easy. Typically I'm not very good at these types of games and they usually kick my arse. But I had no problem kicking the crap out of each boss on the first try. It was fun. :)

The review teams of every type of gaming media have to realize that the only way we will see a truly evolved Zelda....is if Nintendo gives everybody a truly evolved system....not just add stupid gimmics to the same console. The Wii is a polished gamecube.....and the Wii U is a Wii....THATS THE PROBLEM!!!

I don't think that it was right to complain about the lack of voice acting. If Nintendo did do voice acting, people would complain because the voices weren't how they imagined. But if they don't do voice acting, people would complain because they say that they want it. It's a lose- lose situation for Nintendo.

FAIL Jeff, SMG2 only used text for it's dialogue and what happened to that, it got a perfect 10

When did the Zelda games ever have voice acting?.... oh yeah the cd-i games... because those were so good.

cameron789787

Hmmm.... I give this review an 8.5 out of 10. The visuals of Jeff's face were pretty bad, and the horrible MIDI playing in the background throughout the thing was pretty bad as well. And the review has an text-based element? UGH! I think this review's biggest issue is merely a lack of evolution- it's the exact same as every other review on the site. Honestly, how much evolution were they expecting? The game hasn't really strayed too far from the "get an item, use the item to beat a boss, beat Ganon, save Zelda" tree. Reviewing it based on that is pretty stupid, since Ocarina of Time really didn't pull too far from A Link to the Past.

I haven't even finished the game, I just completed the SnowPeak Ruins temple and Im already in love, I would give this game a 9.4 so far. However I do agree with Jeff about how the sounds coming out of the wiimote sound cheap, and the text is ancient, like seriously the text would be just fine for in-game dialouge but cutscenes?! wtf man.. problems aside this game is phenomenal. excellent puzzles that make you think, dungeons that keep me in awe, epic boss fights that require different strategies to tackle, and an open world full of minigames and sidequests are what make The Legend of Zelda The Legend of Zelda

@moviequest14 Twilight Princess was a fairly average game. It was good but not great, it deserves an average rating.

For sure should've been AT LEAST a 9,an 8 at all means just a fairly average game.

I think that it should have been more like 9.0 for Wii and 9.1 for gamecube, I agree with the problems with the Wii controls. In fact it's so obvious my seven year old cousin noticed it. But overall, the barely dated graphics, sound, and text-based conversations don't bother me enough to put it anywhere below a 9. This is a great game even when looking at it's eight year old, literally flawless ancestor Ocarina of Time.

An 8.8? That's it?? This game deserved AT LEAST a 9.5-9.6.

For me, the main problem is the lack of difficulty.

he didnt really say much positive about the game, more negative, sounds more like a mediocre game, although its more of a masterpiece.

what the hell is with the music? i can't even concentrate on what the reviewer is talking about with that irritating background noise.

@BenjaBenjamin Your right. He's totally uninterested in Zelda. I mean, he's only the one who reviewed Ocarina of Time in 1998 and gave it a 10. Oh and I guess he is also the one who gave Wind Waker a 9.3. And he reviewed Majora's Mask, and a couple of others. Yep, totally unfamiliar with Zelda...

I plan on picking this title up tomorrow. It was between this and Super Mario Bros Wii. I guess you really can't go wrong with Zelda though, and EB games has it for 27.99!

No everybody else in the game shouldn't speak! Maybe I'm just being a bit of a fanboy here, but voice acting in a Zelda game?... Would but utter poop! Clearly reviewed by somebody either new to Zelda or otherwise uninterested in the series. What is it with Gamespot of recent (Not even of recent) it would just appear that the reviewers and suchlike don't actually pay any attention to what the gamespot users want or say in these comments... It's that partially why the comment box is here? for feedback?!

has anybody realised that he's complaining about sound but actually his own sound isn't actually matched properly over him speaking?

I can't disagree more when it comes to the review number. It was much better. He really was just ranting at the end about the Wii remote and how it's told in text, he obviously doesn't understand how this series goes.

I wish Nintendo would just make games with normal controls. I'm not even sure i like the Zelda games for DS that use the stylus, and I'd never consider playing these Wii games that make you shake the "numchuk" or whatever.

3D Zelda seems to go progressively downhill. Ocarina of Time's the best, then Majora's Mask, then Wind Waker, then Twilight Princess. I hope Skyward Sword breaks this trend.

ColossalSevnty7

He is too hard. This game was created for the gamecube, not the Wii. I have both and loved them both. When i started to play the Wii version it took some time to get use to everything being reversed. That was strange. I think I have somewhere around 90 hours on the Wii version. Thats insane. I got stuck on fishing for like 10 hours I know! This game is awsome and deserves a 9.0 period.

Neil_Clancy
Neil_Clancy

He seems to think that the "classic Zelda feel" of Twilight Princess is a bad thing. On the contrary, it's exactly what I wanted it to be: an expanded, deepened, and technologically updated OoT with a new storyline. OoT was such a great game that it only makes sense to continue to draw from it.

@MrSaturn33 Zelda II isn't a bad game, but it changed the blueprints for Zelda games and it added unnecessary side scrolling that just made the game extremely difficult. I've tried to get into it several times but it's hard to when you keep dying from the extreme difficulty involved with the added side-scrolling.

MrSaturn33
MrSaturn33

Ryagan, who says Zelda II didn't turn out well? Have you played it for a long amount of time? It's a great game, and stands out amongst the rest in the series. But you shouldn't change the blueprint too much, at least not now, I agree with that.

Ryagan
Ryagan

Oh jeez... This review does not settle well with me. If they did change the blueprint for Zelda games people would have a cow. Last time they tried to change the blueprint for Zelda games, it didn't turn out well (Zelda II). And also: people just seem to HATE the Wii version because "o no!!!1 i hav 2 shake the wii rumote!!1 its gunna kil me 2 get the extra exercize!!!11" I actually liked the controls, people just complain too much.

GunSmith1_basic
GunSmith1_basic

idk about this review. There was some evolution in this game. The cutscenes had a lot of text but the content was a real step forward. I was never all that disappointed about not having voice acting anyways. The game is no 10, but it's at least a 9

detectivepbert
detectivepbert

I think the reviewer said that he thought "parts of its presentation feel stuck in the past" because the music is just a bunch of synthesized tracks rather than orchestral recordings and also because the story is told entirely through text rather than voice acting.
