They didn't even mention how terribly annoying Fi is.

Here's my opinion. If it's not broke, don't fix it. Critics criticize The Legend of Zelda for not adding a number of new things. I don't mind what Nintendo continues to do. I enjoy playing Legend of Zelda because of what it was, what it is and hopefully what it will continue to be. Keep the pattern. As I said earlier, if it's not broke, don't fix it. Skyward Sword deserved a 9.0

The only thing I can say is this: If there's motion plus control option, that would be the exception to the rule. With this requirement of motion plus, you have to be dead accurate with your motions compare to the normal wii remote option. Classic controller would've been the alternative for the old school. With the Wii U on the way, using the tablet should be no problem. Anyway, this is the sad reality when you hope the motion plus would be perfect to use.

I guess I suck at the controls, too. They are by far this game's greatest weakness. What's the point of waving the controller like a sword if the sword doesn't respond to your every swing? Hell, you can kill most enemies by just flicking it around like crazy. The only way to swing without error is to time your swings and adjust your angles so meticulously that it sucks the fun right out of it. And having to constantly recenter the pointer? Dude... I'd give this game a 10/10 if it used Classic Controller. I love it. But the controls are absolutely frustrating the crap out of me.

I can try to agree with all the Points for this very critical Review, except for controls. There is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with controls in this game. I would say they are the strongest aspect of the whole title, what makes this game more fun to Play than Ocarina of Time for example. Repetition was present in all previous Zelda titles I played so far and the stealth section wasnt executed so bad. I am surprised instead he doesnt mention how frustrating the sleeping realm Trials are... anyway this game deserves an 8.5 or 9.0, without doubts.

Control issue? More like user error. Learn to play.

Just beat this game. This guy is just bad at Zelda. And he's mad about it. Period.

So new Zelda in '14? That's cool Nintendo, but in the mean time.....

I'll take a Wind Waker re-release for WiiU, please! So gamers are skeptic about the controller screen? Tingle tuner on the controller screen. Hell, I'd get a WiiU just to replay this game. Add WiiMotionPlus support to items and everywhere in between! Update visuals as necessary. That one's free Nintendo. :)

This game would have been an 8.5 if it had classic controller support.

Starsailor_IT

@Blue-Sky controls are the only perfect aspect of this game. I wouldnt go back to a Controller played zelda.

It looks and sounds to me like Mc Shea wanted the combat to work at a faster pace than it was designed for

lol, seems Gamespot is the only reviwers who dont suck lmao

I tried to controls when it's using the sword or a projectile weapons and it's not perfect. Tom McShea is right to nail that issue.

I don't know about your wiimotes but the controls were tight on this end.  9/10

Huh, I would have given it at least an 8, and I had never played another Zelda game. So, I'm not biassed to the franchise at all.

ITR: zelda fanboys and nintendo fanboys in general forget that the wii u motion lag still hasn't gone anywhere and makes combat in this game a chore. Honestly how the IGN reviewer found this to be a 10 is absurd. I loved the story of this game but the controls still suck just as much is they did back when i returned my twilight princess wii copy for a gc copy.

I agree with you though.

 @707107

Thanks. I think Tom is now doing other things and is no longer monitoring this video review and review text anymore.

johnnyauau
johnnyauau

Make all the lame comments you want. I don't think Tom is there anymore after the review. Don't waste your time with negative comments. Instead just play the game and don't take this review too personally. I can't be clearer than that. I know Tom's review maybe bad but given a score 7.5, it's not so bad really.

Indurrago

@johnnyauau You seem to take the fact that people disagree with Tom personally. LOL.

johnnyauau

 @Indurrago

What's more important? Blaming Tom or doing your own review? If all you do is make excuses then do your own review. Simple.

johnnyauau

@Indurrago To be honest, I never miss a beat and perhaps I do have to wait until there comments finish before I put mine in. That's my nature.

Indurrago
Indurrago

@johnnyauau  I don't have intention of making a review.  Seeing as I never finished the game.  I just find it hilarious over half a year you're still here.

*the villian's and supporting characters aren't as interesting". so what your saying is Ghirahim isn't nearly as interesting as Ganondorf...  that's what I'm getting at... the motion controls only take time to get a custom to, they aren't close to as bad as you make them out to be.the fetch quest to dungeon is a very basic pattern but the dungeons always have something new to introduce and the fetch quest's don't massively impact the rest of the experience so in the conventions of this pattern are new game play experiences that are NOT predictable. gamespot, you lose.

really a 7.5 i rather go to IGN

The game was by far harder than Twilight witch is a good thing. But again the game feels empty when you decide to step back from the main story, there are just uninteresting side missions, no extra dungeons. And of course the next Zelda has to introduce a new enemy, they can't keep Ganon forever and the game has to be longer, at least 50h to complete the main quest.

thetravman
thetravman

I' @Redley911 This may be a spoiler but have you even played the game? Ganon is not even mentioned and this new villain is actually pretty interesting. And the main game took me around 40 hours. That's the longest action/adventure game I've played.

The best Zelda games in my opinion are Wind Waker, Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess.

He named himself Tom instead of Link... automatically not a true Zelda fan. Joking. Nah, but seriously, the game was amazing. The controls were bad about half the time, but they aren't bad enough to make the game get only a 7.5. Also, from judging how he plays, he sounds like he really isn't too skilled. He swings the sword in the same direction constantly, uses his bow on close-ranged enemies, and doesn't realize that you can run when charging up for a skyward strike. Honestly, this game was great and Tom McShea doesn't do it justice at all. Rant over.

i enjoy the fact that in skyward sword theyre trying to get people to use the motion plus and the more i use it the more i enjoy the change from the classic controller. although zelda does begin to get tedious after about the 4th dungeon the controls story, and love for the game are what kept me busy throughout this game. one thing i wouldve liked to see is somehow be able to play this game by using a gc controller. all in all one of the best zelda games i have ever played and will always keep me busy until the game is perfected 110%.

XxHYDROZILLAxX
XxHYDROZILLAxX

To each his own. For me personally, this is one of the greatest games I've ever played, and definitely the best in the franchise. I am primarily a PC gamer and quite picky about visual quality, but this game looks great to me. I just compensate for the jaggies by lowering the sharp on my tv to create a softer image. Strong finish for the Wii with Skyward, Xenoblade, and The Last Story.

blakeyp00h

You can't really make an argument based on an individual's perspective being ill-conceived. My perspective differs from Tom's in that I don't find the Zelda game to be repetitive. Miyamoto needs to ensure that he's developing a Zelda game that a. is better in quality than the previous game b. pleases his current fanbase c. brings in more fans through innovation I'm not a fan of the wii remote nor the exclusion of a classic style controller that has been used so consistently throughout the Zelda series. I do like the fact that they are attempting to make this game more realistic for the user and create a fun and exciting world to explore. I will always play Zelda no matter what.

johnnyauau

Please, don't criticize the reviewer for that reason F0urTwenty. Anyone who's new to the game or not familiar with Zelda should not be alienated because they're doing it wrong. I can't be any more clearer than that. For the record, I have played the game through only for the first part and haven't gone to the dungeons yet. So don't jump the gun on me.

This is the worst review I have ever read and watched in my entire life, 100% sure of that. Gamespot should do a thorough evaluation of there staff, he clearly just doesn't know how to play the game correctly. This is sad gamespot, just sad.

@Slim_Lyrics Wait... what is that some kind of joke? Yah, it's Ocarina of Time, just with a different story, control scheme, inventory system. over world design that resembles a big dungeon, different dungeon and level design... oh wait, thats not Ocarina of Time, thats Skyward Sword. Your comparisons are weak-minded and foolish to the point of sadness and a desperate need to feel cool by not playing mainstream games. Who's the pathetic one here? Me, the one who got the play the game, or you, the guy who missed out on one of the best games of 2011?

@johnny lol? man check it out theres like 10-100 skyward sword online guides (just google"skyward sword walkthrough" but im 99% sure that guide i pointed out will work just fine

Redley911
Redley911

Larkin-54 is so them right, the game is good , brings more challenge then Twilight (difficulty in general) but nothing that revolutionize the franchise. And Johnnyauau I don't understand because you really must not be paying attention to the game to loose yourself, Imean Fay is always there to give you the solution + the little bonus stone in your home town. You really don't need a guide!

Is it a good guide, is it reiliable, TheZeroPercent?

its a good zelda game but doesn't do anything new... that about sums it up game spot is the only review with the balls to say it

johnnyauau

To be honest, I'm pretty lost without a game guide TheZeroPercent. So I'm going to need to find my way around this game. That's the only thing that kept me from playing this game. Don't take it the wrong way but any new gamer might have a hard time at the start.

You can tell that the reviewer isn't a good skyward sword player at all. He never had a shield and when he did it was a new shield, and he doesnt know how to swing the wii remote without making it go crazy. Whatta nuub. by the way, every game with a sequel has the same mistakes as the original.

johnnyauau
johnnyauau

I'm not sure what you mean TheZeroPercent. You're not making sense. You should clear up what you're talking about and try again.

TheZeroPercent
TheZeroPercent

youll notice its MOSTLY only in the heat of combat that the sword wont act right thats usually the player(getting a bit physically overwhelmed) and not the controls because if you just sit there at skyloft or somewhere and try and swing the sword accuratley the sword will usually do what you tell it to when you gotta hit exact points youll notice nintendo never "rushes" you to make an "exact" attack youll always have time to think and swing but the rush of battle will cause you to swing outta wack

johnnyauau

Sorry to chime in but this controversy is still going after about two months and 3900 comments. 35 I might add. I mean is that all gamers could think of? Even the YouTube that show's that he's wrong? It will be great stupidity if you want a professional reviewer like Tom to correct his mistake based on controls, the score and the way he reviews it. I'll repeat once more: Check Zelda Skyward Sword HotSpot for the explanation and try not to jump the gun, no matter how right you are. If you're still not satisfied, got to another game site or play the game for once and give me your opinion afterwards.

@Gelugon_baat  @penpusher The review is based on someone who can't play the game. It's like me reviewing CoD not knowing how to use a control pad and then blaming the game for having poor controls.
