In the beginning of the 3-D era, Nintendo was the company that made the games that settled how would this new generation of games work. It all started with Mario 64 and its worlds, collecting stars and exploring. When it seemed like everything that could be done had already been done Ocarina of Time was released and the world was shocked by Nintendo's capacity of evolution.
Zelda games were already very important in prior systems and bringing the series to 3-D world would be really challenging, but this game shows that Nintendo did perfect to surpass it.
This game's greatness starts with its storyline. You are a simple boy that lives in the Kokiri Forest, all of your friends have fairies but you don't, so one day a fairy comes to you and tells that the destiny of Hyrule lies in your hands, she also tells you that The Great Deku Tree, an ancient forest spirit, is summoning you.
So you head to the Deku Tree and he tells you that you need to save Hyrule from an Evil Gerudo. During the first hours of the game this is all you will know about it, but as you advance things start to be broken to you and your adventure just gets more important and thrilling.
By the time you get to Hyrule Field you will fell like exploring the whole scenarios because they are just so beautiful and attractive that is impossible for you to go where you are supposed to without exploring some other places. Everything in this game is so beautiful, the characters, the enemies, all places, from Hyrule Castle to Gerudo Valley, all the details and textures are flawless. The only problem is on the indoor scenarios that are actually pretty ugly, but when get out of a house you will forget about it when you see how magnificent is Nintendo's work.
The sound effects that will follow you throughout your journey will make things even more exciting, all Ocarina tunes are great, the theme songs from Hyrule Field, Gerudo Valley and Lost Woods are classics. You will find yourself humming al this songs even many years after you finish this game.
The first real revolution was in the Gameplay. A game in which you would need to control a swordsman in such an huge environment could get complicated while battling, but the lock system solves all the problems. By pressing the Z button you can lock on the enemies, and enter in some kind of battle mode, so you don't lose them, while in this mode you can press the B to swing your sword and the A to avoid their strikes. While exploring you will also have the action A button that will perform a certain action depending on what you are doing.
The game is filled with Mini-Games that are really addictive, you can fish, be a contestant on a horse race and even make lots of deliveries. Many side-quests happen during your adventure, you can collect Skulltulas to break a curse that was set on a family from Kakariko Village or search for more heart pieces that will increase your HP.
During your adventure you will have to go through many dungeons filled with nice puzzles. You need to think about everything you do, and to each room a new sruprise is waiting for you and another puzzle needs to be solved. Sometimes they are pretty simple but in some other temples all puzzles are hard and will take a long time to be finished. All dungeons are nice and intelligent, sometimes you will get stuck and things can get boring, but once your problem is solved you will be really happy to advance.
Replay Value is great, after you finish the game, if you haven't done everything and got all the items, you feel kind of obliged to go back and finish all side-quests and kill all Skulltulas.
In a nutshell, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is a game that belongs in the top of any best games of all time list, every single aspect of this game is just perfect. Of course there are some flaws that won't bother you while playing, but nothing can keep this game away from being perfect.
