Link's Awakening is a refreshing journey. Link is shipwrecked on a small island called Koholint. Armed with only a sword and shield, he must battle eight Nightmares to gain the eight Instruments of the Sirens and wake the Wind Fish, which sleeps in a giant egg on Tal Tal Peak. But as he furthers his quest and learns more about the island, he begins to wonder about the very being of the inhabitants. Ok, so the story is something different; Zelda isn't really in this one. Neither is Ganondorf. But the difference is good, it sets this Zelda apart. The graphics aren't really anything special, although considering it's a port of the original Gameboy, they're pretty good. The colorization turned out well, however I was kind of disappointed at Link's lack of color (greenish tunic, white skin). The sound is good. The quality isn't the greatest, but I loved the variety in the music. The different melodies are easy to recall and memorable (Ballad of the Wind Fish... what a great tune). The gameplay is what makes a Zelda game Zelda, right? This one has it. Two buttons, A and B, and you switch between many items (for instance, the boomerang, hookshot, fire rod, or magic powder). Link must solve many puzzles just to get the dungeon key. Each dungeon is shaped like what it's named for (Key Cavern is shaped like a key). Once there, there's even more puzzles. When in doubt, throw a bomb. There's heart containers galore, and lots of bushes to search for items in. I was a tad disappointed not to be able to cut up signs in true Zelda fashion (Kidding!). The refreshingly different story of this game, coupled with the optional new Color Dungeon and the traditional 2D look of the game make it a true addition to the Zelda family.
