Naughty Dog's Arne Meyer discusses player decisions, building tension, and friends and foes in The Last of Us.
Naughty Dog will continue to get my support. They really now how to incorporate an engrossing story with an interactive cinematic experience. I also love the minor attention to detail in the animations and world. The developers bridge more of a connection between the player and the character they're portraying when they incorporate such detail. That's why I enjoyed the Uncharted series so much. Nathan Drake's character was very expressive because you began to notice the subtleties in the animations as you were controlling him. I can't wait for this game. I'm sure it will be fantastic. I also can't wait to see what Naughty Dog has to offer in the future as they continue to master this art form.
and if it looks interesting to you, why not give it a chance regardless if it meets your particular technical specifications or not. Uncharted ran just fine on the PS3, I'm sure this will as well.
im laughing my ass of at these pc players thinking their gaming experience is better on the pc just because the graphics are slightly better, please you guys are just bitter its only a ps3 exclusive, its not about just graphics its about how you play and having fun. i rather play with my controller then play with a mouse and keyboard, everybody has their own opinion, sooner or later pc games will die down as console gaming grows more and more
@marting265 If it was released for PC I'd buy it for PC. They only do this to make consoles sell, obviously. It's like printers and cartridges. With consoles there are two equations PC >> console and console with MGS in it >> PC. BTW I'm sorry for you dumb people not realizing you can connect your controller (even the dualshock) and your TV to your PC. Essentially console = restricted PC without the ability to upgrade.
@marting265 You also forgot to mention that The Last of Us beats any PC game in the graphics field, such as BF3, and Crysis 3.
@vbgbn @marting265 No console can touch the PC platform in graphics performance...or any other hardware category. Your statement is complete idiocy.
@vbgbn @marting265 I love my ps3 and my PC, but please stop being dumb when it comes to graphics. My ps3 games look visually similar to Ipad games.
Humbug, why didn't more games integrate this level of AI IN ADDITION TO their other niche innovations?? I'm glad I can fire off on this here, maybe this will spike global awareness of cheap tricks and shoddy products from developers here now that we raise the bar and hold them accountable for pawning lazy algorithms. In fact, we can even draft a Magna Carta establishing our unimpeachable right to be treated like an esteemed fanbase, or at least an intelligent body of consumers who won't buy junk!
I was so pissed to find out this is ps3 exclusive...i might get a ps3 just for this...and Kingdom hearts 1.5....thats a whole different story though...:)
@ziproy I despise that statement even more than you do because to me it is an admission of guilt and a shoddy excuse all in one spineless statement. It is saying 'Yeah, and for you who expect freedom from a dead-end plot-rush, we won't give it to you but you can believe you will get it long enough to buy the game.'
@tgwolf @ziproy Umm, not really... I actually think its a good idea. The story line progresses (linearly) based on how you choose (wide) to move forward. If you're the kind of banal gamer that likes to waste hours mindlessly wandering around a landscape exploring every nook and cranny even after you've completed the story go play skyrim or something. In games like that whilst you were able to explore a landscape for however long you wanted they were painfully narrow as you were forced to complete a 'quest' how they wanted. Besides, a dead-end plot rush is a campaign more akin to Halo, Call of Duty, Gears of War, etc, etc, etc, where you can pretty much explore your field of view. /rant.
@ziproy i think it makes complete sense. it's a good term. "wide-linear", "open linear". like, theres a set path to follow but it's a big set path that can somewhat be explored.
@MEDzZ3RO are u mad!!! they were some of the best games ever including the vita version
I just love how brutal and everything feels so 'heavy' in this game, like you can literally feel every punch, kick unlike Uncharted series which felt very innocent compared to this.

@burrito_tester @hippiesanta Why mention it then? RE6 is AAA title no matter how many of you hate Capcom.
Dude, the time it takes me to download Angry Birds is more a AAA than RE6.
Arne's beard isn't as good looking as the game, but damn it is glorious.
Naughty Dog, Rockstar, Sony Santa Monica, and Unbisoft Montreal can do no wrong
Too bad itll never come to pc... no way im playing this beautiful game at 30fps with Anti-Aliasing off on the PS3 Even tho i have a PS3 (collecting dust) I just can't do it. I'd rather wait a couple of years for a possible PS3 emulator for the PC and take my chances never playing this game. Oh well, so many other 1080p @ 60fps PC games coming out. Maybe PS4 will be backward compatible and upscale PS3 games using AA and have the juice to support them at 1080@60fps constant. That would be sweet. The game looks really fun.
@ssj2los @60fps You sir make me sick that PS3 of yours should get up and kick your ass. The PS3 is great the graphics are amazing and game play astounding. To download the game to play on a computer is total and utter dumbassery. It is a PS3 exclusive meaning it is and should only be played on the PS3, not a damned computer.
@i_like_space @60fps I may miss out... but it shouldn't be at the punishment of other PS3 owners.. if i choose to miss out of the game it's me using my wallet to send a message to the publisher and devs, not other PS3 owners. "Console only" gamers get so damn defensive over something that has nothing to do with them. Yes I put down the PS3 and its hardware capabilities, YES I have a PC that performs games WAY better so what... get over that. That has nothing to do with YOU personally as a ps3 gamer, JEEZ!!! With so many good games out and coming out I wont lose any fret not playing this one "ps3" exclusive...
@ryancyc @60fps 60fps isnt graphics... its gameplay..... usually you'd have to turn DOWN the graphics to achieve 60fps. And i prefer to enjoy a game for its gameplay, story, leveling systems, creativity, freedom..etc.. but all @ a 60fps so i can make all of it out. 60fps is not eye candy, its not graphics, it's immersion.... and I prefer to be more immersed in the games I play. Learn something about what u choose to insult ppl over.
@ryancyc @ssj2los @60fps You do realize that the only reason I got vocal about frame rate was because you and Venom_Raptor decided to speak for everyone in saying that 60 fps isn't needed? I would've left that part alone if it wasn't for you guys being so snobby and acting like everyone should hold that opinion. I don't feel that way so I decided to explain my opinion on it and you took it as me saying that I look down to you all. I absolutely don't. I still use my consoles quite frequently and they're superb for parties whereas PC falls short in that category. It's just that frame rate holds a huge part in letting the game flow well which is crucial for me. It has absolutely nothing to do with graphics.
Also, I actually do have a hard time watching action movies because of the low frame rate and it's the reason why I don't bother watching them as frequently. Same goes for games. Just please don't act like you're an expert on this stuff when I'm assuming that you don't have real solid experience with a gaming PC.
@Grovilis @ssj2los @60fps 360/ps3 fanboys are just as annoying as PC elitists, maybe even more annoying since there's so much more of them. You're not elitists for preferring better performance, you're elitists for being very vocal about how much better your games look and run and having to remind console gamers of it. I've said it a million times, 60fps would be great for all games, completely smooth gameplay with no blur or anything, all the fast-paced action is clear, but you guys talk as if your head will explode from playing 30fps. Nothing wrong with preferring 60fps, in a perfect world everyone would prefer their games that way. If you have a multiplat game, console and PC, then good for you; choose PC. But what I'm saying is if you have an exclusive console game and you're going to be so picky about it that you wouldn't play it even if it was good, then you're being unreasonable. If you can handle movies not being in 60fps I'm pretty sure you wouldn't die from playing a game that's not 60fps either, but that's exactly what some PC players make it sound like.
No, I called you snobby for simply deciding for others what their opinion on games should be. It's no different than what extremist PC elitists say. As I told S4vagecabbage, video games are meant to be fun and "fun" is subjective. Some people get most of their joy out of standing in awe of a game's graphics, which is perfectly fine. For me, that's not a huge deal and if it was, my most anticipated game wouldn't be the indie game called Monaco which has 8-bit graphics.
As I said in another comment, I have to wonder how many you guys have actual experience with 60 fps games. The difference is much more noticeable than minimal and really helps you to get into gameplay because it lets you see more of what's going on. 30 fps makes things look much more choppy and it's the reason why I wish movies had higher frame rates so that we could actually see in fine detail what is going on in these action scenes. I'm only bothering to explain this, BTW, because of how many people here simply think that PC gamers are elitists because of this.
I can understand your aggravation towards these extremists who get in your face all of the time, but it's just as annoying when console gamers tell me how frame rate doesn't matter even though they probably have little to no experience with PC which gives them asbolutely no room to talk. Like I said before, I still plan on getting the game. I'm just waiting for a price drop. Also, I don't understand why PC gamers are always the ones to get called elitists. Xbox 360/PS3 players can be just as snobby to Nintendo Wii players.
@Grovilis @ssj2los @60fpsI never said it was objective that a game runs at 30fps, arguing about games is mostly subjective anyway. Like I said, 60fps would be great for everything but if you're going to pass up on a bunch of good, possibly amazing console games just because they don't perform as good as PC games then you're being an anal bead. it's funny you called me snobby for not being so picky, because the snobby people are the PC guys that refuse to play any console games and will only play games that are 1080/60. actually there's nothing wrong with preferring your games that way, but my problem is that PC guys can't just suck it up once in a while for some good exclusive console games and have to constantly state the obvious that console games run a bit "worse" and that their system runs games the best. It's like a film watcher who refuses to watch classic or great films, just because they're not blu ray. Just suck it up and stop being so picky, because for now the only chance to play this game is on PS3.
"what he was saying is that console games running at 30fps are completely fine and really nothing to complain about."
That's entirely subjective and you'd be flat out wrong to state otherwise. Ever since I got my PC, I have grown accustom to playing my games at a solid 60 frames per second and playing anything below that is jarring and really breaks the flow for me. Saying that this opinion doesn't matter is incredibly snobby of you. Granted, I still plan on getting the game. I'm just going to wait for a price drop because of it.
@Grovilis @ssj2los @60fps He's insinuating it, by saying he wouldn't touch a game that is, god forbid, 720p/30fps and will only play a game if it's 1080p/60fps, which is only possible on PC of course. and obviously throwing in the fun fact that his ps3 is collecting dust which has nothing to do with anything, unless to imply that it's not good enough for him. sure, who wouldn't love to have 1080p and 60fps for all games, but if you seriously can't play a console game that's already 720p and some motion blur just because it's 30fps then you're being unreasonably anal. Venom_raptor never said anything about ps3 games running at 60fps. what he was saying is that console games running at 30fps are completely fine and really nothing to complain about.
@ssj2los As a PS3 exclusive it'll run just fine, doesn't need to be on the PC
@Venom_Raptor @ssj2los Being a PS3 exclusive doesn't mean it'll run at 60 fps. Uncharted 2 ran at 30 fps. There's nothing wrong with that, mind you. It's just that some people, such as myself, have a hard time playing games below 60 frames. It breaks the flow in my most humble opinion.
@S4vagecabbage@Venom_Raptor@ssj2los
"Sometimes a high framerate improves things but remember ladies and gents, the human eye really only recognizes this when things are slowed down."
I don't know where you heard that, but it's the other way around. Noticing higher frame rate is mostly noticeable in FAST moving scenes. It's the reason why first person shooters typically require that extra performance boost.
Regardless, though. Noticing the difference between 30 fps and 60 fps isn't hard at all and I don't understand where this myth came along. I have to wonder how many of you actually have solid experience with a gaming PC and, if you don't, you really don't have much room to talk about this (I'm trying to say this as nice as I can).
Now look. I have absolutely NO problem playing games with low tier graphics. If it did bother me, I my most anticipated game of the year wouldn't be the indie game called Monaco (I'll post the video down below).
What DOES bother me is low frame rate and, again, it's absolutely noticeable. It's simply not debatable unless you have some solid experience with it. A lot of people simply don't care, but I do, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.
Lastly, I'm not telling ANYONE that their platform of choice is wrong. I'm simply getting aggravated at how many people get on their high horse whenever someone even hints at disliking their platform of choice. It's mindbogglingly ridiculous to practically tell someone that their taste in games is simply wrong.
Games are meant to be fun and "fun" is subjective. There is no set rule.
*sigh* anyway, here's the game I was talking about:

@Grovilis @Venom_Raptor @ssj2los
Heh...fellow gamers, consoles and pc game producers need to either step back for a second or continue to sit on their arse refusing to watch this industry get flushed down the friggin' toilet. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate good graphics but they ain't the most important thing. Emerssive and/or enthralling gameplay is where it's at. Sometimes a high framerate improves things but remember ladies and gents, the human eye really only recognizes this when things are slowed down. (We'll see who understands the ribbing there) 30 fps is enough, they'll just need to worry about the amount they'll be animating at once on screen. If they're legit tapping out with this level of hardware's framerate then don't just jump to the next level! First, figure out society's attention span, observe how these "hardcore" gamers all show symptoms of ADD. Then realize the effect of the constant slow motion crap is having on us. Please try to remember that we, the gamers, don't all have the time or the money to buy new hardware for meager visual improvements...come on lads...gameplay...
