Though we still don't have real information on Team ICO's upcoming adventure, we did get to see some new footage.
After a White Knight Chronicles presentation, the developers from Level-5 wanted to show us a video that they put together with designer Fumito Ueda. We haven't heard much about the game since the trailer was unveiled officially at Sony's Electronic Entertainment Expo press conference, but we did get to see a bit of previously unreleased (and unleaked) footage to get an idea of the game's direction. In an interview with the man behind Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, Fumito Ueda talked about how realism can be achieved through the imagination. Ueda also wanted to clarify that the creature we saw in The Last Guardian trailer was not a bird, dog, or cat but an imaginary creature that could be a combination of the three.
Ueda went on to say that he spent a lot of time detailing how the tail would move. Because of the interaction between the tail and the boy, there needs to be as much detail as possible. His goal was to create a strange and fantastical world that felt real and to show that the imagination could lead to a connection with realism. It's obvious that a lot of attention was paid to every little detail, from the grass and feathers of the creature to how the boy interacts with his surroundings. Ueda still wasn't able to discuss the story, but he did say he likes the unexpected and would like to surprise people with the ending.
We were then shown some brief footage of the game. It was mainly of the environments so that we could get a feel for how much effort was put into creating this peaceful but elaborate temple. After the camera panned to the blue sky, it settled on several locations so that we could see and hear the different sounds of nature. From the steady flow of water from a small fountain to the gentle howl of the wind, it was amazing to just be able to listen to the subtle sounds of dust being blown across a field or the sharp crackle of a fire. We then heard a lone horn play in the distance as the camera focused on a large feathered beast that was sleeping peacefully. A flute began to play, and we saw a young boy reading in a quiet room. He eventually approached the resting creature and moved in slow exaggerated steps to avoid waking it. Once he approached the enormous doglike face, he reached out to pet it. The sleepy creature woke up and stretched its birdlike feet before reaching behind its ear to scratch it like a dog and shake itself out.
The trailer ended, and we were left with more questions we wanted answered. No release date or other details have been shared, but stay tuned to GameSpot for more 2009 Tokyo Game Show coverage.
Can't wait for this game, it looks so beautiful. I haven't played ICO or SOTC or even heard of them before I stumbled across the trailer for TLG. Now I must buy ICO for the wait until TLG's release. Guess I'll be getting a PS3 after all!
As i have said from the day the PS3 was announced, "Sony will only get my cash when the follow up to SOTC comes out." So, it looks like i should finally start saving.
i remember playing shadow of the colossus, i didnt really get it and dont even know if i killed one of them i just didnt know how to do it, but i was young so that might have been it..hope this is good though
I don't think I'll buy this game but the RPGs on the PS3 are rely cool, and the FPS exclusive titles are way more my style, plus most of the multiplatform titles I love I can get on the PS3 as well, and developers are finally taking advantage of the RSX chip set in the PS3, and the Cell CPU and that means extra features, and more content. All good news for PS3 owners. (other then the BD feature that cuts the game disc size in half for most titles) BTW: My Xbox360 DVD tray died just a few days ago. Thats my 3rd Xbox360 to start to glitch out, or have problems. I'm getting a PS3 slim now. Better graphics, more hardcore titles, and last but not least I won't miss out on my favorite multiplatform titles.
I'll buy a ps3 solely for this game. SOTC impressed me that much. It was one of the best games I've ever played. But I thought Team Ico was the dev for The Last Guardian, not Level-5. It's a baby griffon, with the head, front legs and wings of an eagle, and the hind quarters and tail of a lion. From the looks of it, it'll get a lot bigger too.
@ Bevmo: Who cares about graphics, even if I cared I must be blind but frankly I don't see any differences in terms of graphics between the two systems
I sold my PS2 before getting a chance to play ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. Huge regret. I've got a 360 and have been waiting for the ps3 price drop and for a solid line-up of games before I make the investment, but the more I look at this game the more I think it is time...
wonder why people stil compare both consoles... one of them lasts 2 years and the other last 4+ years whilst lacking in framerate and anti-aliasing.
for those who say that the 360 has better graphics, prepare to see why many people bought the ps3 because this game is crazy for graphics. ah, i got the ps3 because i knew at first it wouldnt be as good in the beginning, but in the long run it would be a better investment than the 360
Clearly this dog or rat will soon become the phoenix battling some of the ferocious monsters ever towering the skies. These are japan style folklore with a bit of twist n fantasy.
