We get our hands on Sony's upcoming HD compilation of fan-favorite games from Team Ico.
The upcoming Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection for the PlayStation 3 is the highly anticipated HD compilation of Team Ico-made PlayStation 2 games that was detailed at last year's Tokyo Game Show. The fan favorites are getting the red-carpet treatment for the collection thanks to an HD upgrade and 3D support. We were able to get a taste of both games--running in 2D and 3D--during a visit to Sony's Japanese offices this week and are happy to report that they're both looking sharp.
We went in chronological order and tried out 2001's Ico first, which let us relive the atmospheric adventure that follows a young boy as he tries to escape a castle with a princess named Yorda. The unique puzzle game resonated with fans because of its art direction, music, and gameplay. The PlayStation 3 remaster of the game looks sharp and benefits from the HD upgrade, and the game has a subtle beauty to it due to the art direction. The game's art style has a minimalist look that's clean and shines with the resolution upgrade: just don't expect crazy photo-realism. The game's frame rate was solid in the work-in-progress version we played, as were the controls. The biggest tweaks to the original game are the inclusion of gameplay elements from the European version of the game (including a new ending and a two-player mode), trophies, and 3D support. Given the nature of the environments and gameplay, the 3D effect in Ico is subtler than we've seen in other games. While this means the 3D isn't as in-your-face as in some other titles, we have to say we're happy about that.
On the other hand, 2005's Shadow of the Colossus makes a flashier impression because of the game's scale. You're cast as Wander, a boy on a quest to slay 16 gargantuan creatures called colossi in order to save the life of his special lady. The stylish game was more action-oriented than Ico and featured awesome battles against the colossi. The remastered game looks outstanding thanks to sharper textures that bring the game's world to vivid life. The improved visuals are further complemented by a smooth frame rate, which is much more stable than in its PlayStation 2 predecessor. Like Ico, the game played just as well as we remember it. The implementation of 3D in Shadow of the Colossus bears some calling out because it really adds to the game's visual impact. The upgraded visuals and 3D effect make for a stunning combination, especially when you're fighting the colossi. We have to say we were very impressed by how 3D has been worked into the game without coming across as forced.
We're very excited by what we played of the upcoming collection. The games look great, with Shadow of the Colossus really popping. If you missed these games the last time around, you should definitely pick up the collection when it ships later this year. For those who did play the games and loved them, the upcoming compilation is worth spending some time with. Look for more on Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection in the coming months.
wow cant wait for this! I was only about 7 when i played ICO for the first time, it's a shame i never got to play SoTC as ps3 game out around the same time, hopefully it'll be as good as ICO!
k, so the april 1st release date was obviously fake... any new info on its actually release?! I can't wait to play SotC again and Ico for the first time!
Ico is one of those rare games which could be a tale, a book, a movie. It is used by specialists to help children in a better understanding of their environment - to keep it short. Shadow of the Colossus has also more than its merits, however it comes more as a traditional boss fight game, although the picture is unrivaled. Both games on PS3 is great news for the western gamers who ignored ICO despite some heavy marketing and afterwards made ICO a cult game.
Own both on PS2 but will be getting this purely for SoTC (all time favourite game) Never a fan of ICO though, decent but hugely overrated.
these are 2 games i definately wont mind playing thru again! cant wait to check out shadow in HD 3D!
Ico & SotC - the main reason I bought a PS2. Ico & SotC - the second reason I bought a PS3, the first being The Last Guardian, which I was expecting last Xmas, not next Xmas!
I heard or read rather, that they were dispensing the zoom in and out camera aspect for Ico and pulling it in closer. Anyone know if that is true?
Yeah Sony! Now, you could also put those games to be sold on PSN, like God of War collection and one more request: that you make such a "Games on Demand" on PSN, with the older games for PS3 and PS2 games too (Silent Hill 2, for example). I'll buy Ico and Shadow of the Colossus for my PS3 for sure, but if they were on PSN, I would buy them through download. Otherwise I buy the blu ray, no problem. Cause I think the older games should have that option: download or disk media.
I own both already, but both my PS2 and PS3 with BC are R.I.P. so.. This might be good for collection qnd revive some old good moments once in a while. Brilliant games anyhow, highly suggested!
@DanieIL5583 I know and I already have Final Fantasy 7 from PSN see Square Enix has made some very crappy games lately and since Final Fantasy 7 is one of their best games games they should remake it, Imagine what it would look like with todays graphics!
No words can explain how excited I am to play these beautiful games. Sadly, i never played ICO and im hoping its as good as SOTC!!!
i plan to buy this and the last guardian on the first day. I'll spend any amount of money for a Last Guardian special edition...
Ooooh i cant wait to play these again, its been ages since my ps2 worked and i barely managed a single playthrough of both of these.
@Shamwownow212 Square Enix don't have the required staff and time to undertake such a project. FFVII is a huge game, so don't expect it out soon. You can buy the PS1 classic on the PSN anyways, so what are you worrying about?
I hope that some major gamehouses follow their example and try to make games with this kind of grandeur. Ico and Shadow are the cleanest and either the greater games I ever played! Let's wait and raise both thumbs! ^_^
Some may call it blasphemy but I never finished Shadow of the Colossus. I got to the last Colossi and just stopped for no reason. I guess now is a great time to pick up where I left off. I loved the HD treatments for the GOW collection. I'm sure I'll love this too.
Played SOTC never played ico so it will defiantly be a pick up for me, and nice to be able to experience SOTC again but in HD. looks like ill be able to use my ps3 for more than just a blu-ray player this yr.
Can't wait for this, I never got the chance to play ICO and SOTC was one of my absolute favorite games on the PS2. This collection alone makes 2011 a great year for gaming.
Nice, I'll finally get to play these games, quite excited since I had the original xbox and not a PS2. Time to catch up with their old games before the new game they're making hits the streets!
I hope the trailer above is a cutscene from the ps2 games, because they can improve the graphic a bit more shiny like games in ps3
I have both of the originals on PS2. That's not going to stop me from getting this. HD, and I'm a trophy whore.
Why doesn't square enix just remake Final Fantasy 7 with next gen graphics and trophy support for the PS3 after getting it off PSN im loving the game seriously it what be a day one buy for me!
Makes me wish these weren't PS3 exclusive....since I don't wanna fork out more cash for another system :/ I've always wanted to play these games though.
I've wanted to play ICO for a little while now, and I've also really been looking forward to SOTC in HD. I'm probably picking this up when it comes out :)
damn I am envious on this one! I dont have a ps3 and luvvved ICO. One of those real eye openers back in the day when I had a ps2. Absolutely beautiful game. for those that have a ps3, I'd keep an eye open for this and look forward to your reviews
SOTC = one of the greatest games ever made....... i wish they would have added a few more colossi in this updated version
