Very enjoyable, doesnt take itself seriously. The first decent kinect game. A bit short.

I've not yet played a game thats made me glad I forked out for a kinect. The Gunstringer is the first game that goes some way towards addressing that.

This game doesn't take itself seriously. It is presented as a puppet show telling the story of the gunstringer, a skeletal puppet cowboy out to get revenge on his old gang. I wouldn't say its hilarious but the lighthearted tone, the responisive narrator, cartoony graphics and the way the game plays on your experience as a story being told to an audience works really well and strikes the right tone.

The game mechanics are pretty simple with most of the game being based on using your left hand to move the gunstringer - avoiding obstacles and popping out from cover etc - and your right hand to target and shoot enemies. The game spruces it up with some platforming sections and fighting sections in which you punch your enemies as well as enjoyable boss fights, which I'm not going to try to explain.

Some elements are weaker than others, the platforming not being so great, but overall this is a really enjoyable game to play. The kinect controls are generally pretty good, although I think its the nature of kinect that there are times when it frustratingly doesn't do what you want.

On the downside the game is a bit short and also a bit easy. Having said that, there is a hardcore mode to unlock. I haven't tried it yet but that is there if you want a bit more of a challenge. The length of the game is what stopped me giving a higher score, but I think it deserves an 8 because its the first game that shows you can create an fun single player experience with kinect and in fairness it has been released at a lower price which reflects its short length.

Overall a really fun game to pick up and play, good presentation which strikes the right tone and varied enough not to get boring. This game points towards the potential of kinect and hopefully there is more to come.
