The Godfather is overall an good sandbox game, but the way the story unfolds just isn't satisfying.

The Godfather is one of the few movie license games that is ACTUALLY good, but unfortunatley it has its share of problems. The game starts off with you playing as the character's (whom you can name in game but is in the second game revealed that his real name is Aldo Trapani) father. You go through a fighting tutorial until you are gunned down and your quest to get revenge for your father, and to rise up in the ranks of the mob begins.

Unfortunatley, the story telling itself is absolutely weak. Without the knowledge of what happens in the movie, you can often feel yourself lost within the plot because unlike other games, where it might say "December 1946" or something along those lines when the time changes, this game does absoluetly nothing like that. When starting a mission, all of a sudden you realize that its been a year but the game does nothing to make it seem that things have changed. Major events in the story such as your girlfriend Frankie, and the death of Don Vito seem meaningless due to the simple fact that the plot does pretty much nothing to get you attracted to these characters although there are exceptions such as Sonny, the dons son. And although the story telling feels weak, if you've seen the movie, acting as a part of some of the key scenes is always cool.

That's not to say that the game is bad because it is still an overall fun game, and the missions themselves are fun. The gun mechanics are your standard sandbox game mechanics but then there comes "The Godfathers" version of territories, such as the ones in GTA: San Andreas. These are rackets, where you get to intimidate store owners in order to get money and to build up the mobs strength. You can also take over warehouses and mobs compounds to wipe them out completely. The feeling of being a mobster, is just an overall awesome feeling as you level up and get to put points into skills such as fighting, and health, and you also get to rise up in the ranks into the mob until you eventually become the don of new york.

Overall, The Godfather is a fun, sandbox game and although it has its problems with the storytelling, its worth picking up for any sandbox game fans.
