Another "so-so" GTA clone.......

User Rating: 6 | The Godfather XBOX
The original Godfather film is widely regarded as one of the greatest movies of all time and set the standard for modern-day "gangster" movies. However, the game doesn't even come close to living up to the standards of the movie. Also, with it's free-roaming style, The Godfather game is often compared to the Grand Theft Auto series, but that comparison is also a disappointment.

The biggest issue with The Godfather is that it suffers from a really bad case of repetition. The side missions range from assissinating various people around the city to taking over business owned by rival gang members. But each mission is much too similar to the others; if you've played through one assissination mission, you've played them all! The story missions are the only ones that give you any sense of satisfaction but even they get boring pretty quickly. Furthermore, the waves of rival gang members that you'll have to gun-down all look, sound, and act alike. The gun battles seem a lot less fun after you've squared-off against the 100th thug (someone please turn off that cloning machine!). Furthermore, the city environments that you are given to explore are just as repetitive as the characters. The city blocks as well as the insides of the buildings all look the same from place to place, giving a much less realistic feel to the game. Throw in the fact that the missions are generally difficult and, as a result, you'll have to go through them multiple times to complete them, and you'll know exactly how Bill Murray felt in the movie "Groundhog Day".

Overall, The Godfather is a decent game but only for about the first 3 or 4 hours of game play. The game is so repetitive, that you never truly feel like you're immersed in the world it's trying to create, and your left with a game that gives you little reason to play it through to the end. Definitely a weekend rental.
