Quite frankly? Unimpressive.

The Final Round is a Playstation 1 golfing game that takes place... somewhere. There's no name for the only course you can actually play in the game. With only 6 players to choose from, and only 1 course to play on, even before you take a single swing you see that it's not that variety-oriented. And it sure takes a while before you will even see your first swing.

First, you have to manually pick your camera angle. Then, you choose your shot's direction. Then, you have to (again manually) set the golfer's stance. And now you can actually pick your club up and shoot. It's not that hard to shoot. Press twice to set where you hit the ball, press a third time to set the power. And there it goes. After your shot, you'll see a nifty little replay of your shot, but it's often offset by the poor background voice. "That's in t' waater!"

And now to the most critical part of golf: putting. There are extra camera angles on the green, but unfortunately most of them won't help you very much. The game's texture mapping system adds to the confusion, requiring use of the game's grid to actually get an accurate shot. Although getting to the green is easy, actually sinking the putt is not.

Overall, the graphics look pretty good, if not for some terrain blending issues. The sound is a little unfitting, especially the announcing voice. The gameplay is decent once you get a grip on the putting mechanics, but it just isn't immersive enough to really get you excited about this game. Overall, The Final Round should be close to, if not, your last resort if you're looking for a golfing game on the PS1.
