My favorite thug encounter happened in Riverwood a while into the game. I ended up decapitating two of the thugs near each other so their heads landed almost next to each other. Should have taken a pic, I know, but never thought of it. I was laughing too hard. I think mine was signed Farengar for stealing one of his soul gems.
p.s. Also, I thought I could only get one beheading per fight but, there it was. haven't had it happen since though.

My first encounter i noticed them walking slow. So being a gamer i summoned a storm astronach from a scroll at a low level. launch night to be exact. He went straight for them. i was at a witch's base.

You know, I know all about the hired thug encounters, but I don't think I've ever had one myself. I don't really steal much on a regular basis, but I've still done my fair share of it overall during the course of the game. Is the encounter that rare or am I just lucky?

I'd say lucky or maybe you don't wait around long enough for them to saunter up to you.

One time I encountered the thugs in Riverwood, sent by Bolund, brother of Solaf who runs the Gray Pine Goods store in Falkreath.
POSSIBLE SPOILERS!
It was in the dark of night, I left Gerdur's house to do some midnight smithing.
As I crossed the road towards the blacksmith's I saw three armed men sauntering into town. It took me a moment to realize who they were( I had encountered them in previous playthroughs) by then I was standing by the forge.
Knowing what they were there for and having left my armor at Gerdur's ( I was in my town clothes) I ran screaming like a little girl back to the (as I thought at the time) safety of the house. With my assailants in hot pursuit I entered the house.
Well the scum followed me inside! After a ferocious battle Ralof and I stood victorious, but sad to say Gerdur and Hod had gone to Sovngarde.
So I shipped the kid off to the orphanage in Riften and took over the mill.
Later I took out my revenge by going to Falkreath, entering the Gray Pine Goods store from the second floor and sent an arrow into Bolund's back with none being the wiser.

LOL I did the same thing once only I ran into Riverwood Traders. They followed me in so I ran upstairs and outside. They followed me out so I thought I'd jump over the railing to get away. Nope! wouldn't let me go over. I had already used my shout to stun them to get away the first time so I just ran my a$$ off back inside then out again. I think I survived but it was funny as hell.

if you're serous about meeting these desperadoes, try killing Anise, of Anise's Cabin, and the hunter who lives north of the river from her. I always murder them at the start of the game and almost always run into the thugs in Riverwood when I get back there after retrieving the golden claw. not sure who "Moira" is, but she always sends them after me

One does not just walk into Mordor: not with 10,000 men could you do this thing. However, you could send the Dohvahkin and Lydia; or just Lydia
