I popped in my Skyrim game today, having not played it in three months, and started a new character. However, after about an hour in, I felt the game had already become, for a lack of a better word, redundant. While i can appreciate the fact that I can never really run out of things to do, everything seems so bland and boring to me.

Basically, I'm asking if there's some mentality or game style I'm missing out on that seems to keep everyone but me from finding this game boring. Please and thank you...

It helps if you don't think about it too much. Just throw yourself in and try to craft your own story if possible. The story and the world that Bethesda provided are cool, but I get more enjoyment weaving my own story within it.

If this interests you, start with imagining your own story for your character. Who were they before being captured with the Stormcloaks? How did they get into that mess?

After answering these things, play the game accordingly. It's kind of like roleplaying that way.

I agree with what's already been said, the role-playing aspect.

At the moment I am playing without fast travel, and with the HUD hidden - so no health meter, no crosshairs, no floating markers. I am trying to make up the story for my character as I go along. For example when I started, I intended to race to Riften to join the Thieves' Guild - Gunner had already heard about them and wanted to join up to make his fortune, so that he could train to be a master enchanter. But when I encountered Aela fighting the giant I thought hey, maybe I can earn my money honourably instead.

Just set yourself a couple of guidelines about your playstyle and try it a bit differently. Crank up the difficulty (or down if you prefer!)

    Friends,

The game does a good job of scaling to you. so you an explore pretty well, and not get to beat up.

I would just forget the story, and pick a spot on the map.... in the middle of no where. with nothing else around. it seems like there is something EVERYWHERE. so if you pick a spot with nothing. by the time I got there. I found like 3 or 4 things, I had no idea. You can spend hours and hours just exploring caves. Bring a follower, to carry stuff, just loot caves, and explore..

There are also some like questlines... companions, mages, thieves, dark brotherhood. You dont even need the main story, you can do these, and have fun.

My friend is playing skyrim, I asked him about the dark brotherhood, he did not know what I was taking about. I see he has not experiences much of the game, and he has had it for a month. There is alot to do here. Just enjoy your time.

Yup, my story for my Mage was the following

My high elf was a apprentice Mage who wanted to follow the footpaths of his father (a legendary Mage). He learnt of the collage of winter hold in skyrim so he took a storm cloak ship to skyrim. He was captured by imperials and was about to be killed until Alduin swooped in.

    And you know the rest...

fus ro dah still cracks me up; so get all three levels as soon as you can and see how far you can throw people for sport. alzo, i recently learned you can pickpocket people while they're recovering from being fus'd; so use that to your advantage (doesn't level up pp skill, but it's an easy way to defeat briarheart warriors: just remember to pick their heart first, so that everything you pick after is not tagged "stolen"

other fun things to do: equip your follower with the giant's club from tumble arch pass; amusing and effective. have you tried the Ritual Stone? there's a reason why it's so close to Whiterun: they wanted you to use it early in the game. you can raise a zombie army and cut a swath through Skyrim. you'll have to abuse the "wait" function, because you can only use that power once a day; but it'll give you a different way to clear dungeons and bandit camps. also good for giant camps, but you still have to stay out of arm's reach

if you're a grinder, don't. get your loot and goods from the glitched merchant chests: the dawnstar and markarth ones are easy to find, though the solitude one can be a challenge (be sure to crouch when looking for that one). three carriage rides and you'll be rolling in dough and enchanted toys

Right now I'm trying to play as a berserk character (Orc, Heavy Armor, 2-H), but perhaps I should restart and try a stealth one instead. Do knives have cool kill animations?

They are quite boring really, being a sneaky kajhiit was boring in my opinion, much preferred my Orc warrior or high elf Mage. You didn't need stealth when you could smash people in seconds

After playing this game for 12 months I also stopped playing it on PS3. I have the DLC on Xbox but I haven't touched the latest one Dragonborn yet.

I'm playing the old Call of Duty Black Ops and trying to hit 15th Prestige. Having a blast and getting my K/D above 1.00 for the first time playing on Dom. exclusively.

Play another game and maybe come back later. That's what I'm doing now.

Anyway, have you tried a Conjuration Archery Sneak Assassin build? Pretty overpowered build IMO. Use two towers for extra followers.

Yea, ive found making up your own story helps breath new life into the game again also if youve got a good imagination. This is my 3rd playthrough right now (i play it in between newer releases) and right now i named my human viking character Beowulf. I just pretend this is his story before he became the famous hero of the poem, sort of like this is what helped to shape him and start him on his journey to being a hero.

i just enjoy chopping peoples heads off and killing inocent people so i never really get bored of it.

Why is it so quiet here in Whiterun? Where is everyone? Oh right, i killed them all

If you have put at least 100 hours into Skyrim and find it to be a bit stale, I would suggest following these guidelines:

    - Play on Master difficulty. It's not terribly challenging, it just requires you to be a bit more strategic and use all the resources at your disposal.

    - Don't spend time with Smithing, Enchanting or Alchemy. These skills essentially make loot obsolete. Instead, invest in a skill tree you've never used before. (For me, it was Illusion. Why did I wait so long??)

    - This may seem obvious, but complete the quests that you never bothered to finish on previous playthroughs. There are a LOT of things to do in Skyrim, even without the DLC. You'll be surprised how many new experiences there are to be had.

    - Don't spend a lot of time micromanaging your inventory. It gets tedious pretty fast. Keep what you need, sell what you can, and toss the rest.

    - Don't power level. This refers to any sort of skill grinding, obsessively training every level, or using any standing stone that accelerates your skill leveling (Warrior, Thief, Mage, Lover). I find the game to be more fun at level 20 than level 60, since you've a better chance of finding relatively valuable loot.

Hopefully this will make the game seem a bit more exciting and less bogged down by unnecessary tedium.
