How do I make sure my Grand Soul Gems don't get filled with weaker souls?

I enchanted a weapon that casts soul trap, had a bunch of different empty soul gems of each type, (Grand, Greater, Common, Lesser, Petty). After doing a bunch of quests I noticed that most of or all of my Grand and Greater soul gems were filled with Petty and Lesser souls, even though I had empty soul gems of that type that could have been filled instead.
Should I only cast soul trap instead of using that weapon so I make sure I know I am killing a Grand soul to fill a Grand soul gem?

Just drop the gems you filled "wrong."
They'll clear again.
No way to make sure you don't fill ones the way you describe though... other than counting and knowing which souls are what.

Also, only mammoths are grand souls. Anything else is greater or lower. Hope that helps.

Yup. Then pick them up again. Works in containers too (so don't store your "good" gems).

Yeah.... which is why I corrected myself. Those are (almost always) leveled anyway.

Alchemy is my favorite skill in the game. I get a thrill out of discovering a new effect on a common ingredient, or something surprising about a rare one. Combining stuff I find on my way to a market... then using the money to buy something awesome. = D

What? Draugr death and overlords and the boss Falmar (whose title I forget) at the least do as well.
Draugr Deathlords have greater souls not grand I made the assumption that they had grand souls before and ended up with like 20 greater souls in my grand soul gems >.> and I don't like having lesser souls.
