The upstairs portion of the main hall has two spare beds, which I assume adopted children can sleep in. Am I wrong in this assumption? Are those beds only for the bard and carriage driver or something?
Also, does the oven in the kitchen make it worthwhile? Are the new recipes any good?

No you don't need the bedroom wing. Although it does give you beautiful porch with a view...

I think you specifically need a child's bed and child's chest. I know you need both a bed and chest to adopt a kid, as I just tested it the other day. Had only the beds, tried to adopt Lucia for the test, and the only dialogue option available after she asks if I had a place for her was that there was no room.
Since you can only get child's chests in the bedroom wing in Hearthfire houses, it's likely that you have to have it to adopt.

That's not true. In my first house my wings were: Kitchen, greenhouse, and trophy room. The only beds and chests I had were upstairs and I was able to adopt Lucia and Aleson.

You don't need the bedroom, as was said. You can get all the furniture required for children in the main hall. The bedroom looks stupid anyway, it's just a room with three beds in it... not very lavish, and who wants to live in the same room as their children? What if they interrupt my Lover's comfort?
I never built the bedroom and have two kids. Same with my friends. I've built the bedroom on a third house and it looks dumb.

I always go bedroom, kitchen and storage. But that's just my preference.
Most of the wings are made redundant by the features of the main hall (enchanting, alchemy, outdoor garden, cellar armory). The only one that isn't made redundant by the main hall is the library, as there is only one bookshelf in the main hall. But the library is a tower, and the layout of the towers is terrible, imo.

I think there is a bug without the bedroom. I built Falkreath with bedroom, armory, trophy room which was fine and allowed me to adopt children however when I built the pale house I used kitchen, greenhouse, storage and the option shows up in convo with my spouse to move there and she says she will meet me there but never leaves lakeview.
