Without the chests resetting and losing all the items? I remember this happening in Oblivion and am not sure if it happens in Skyrim. I'm carrying too much stuff and need a place to store it but not ready to buy a house yet.

If memory serves only the storage in the Arch Mage's Quarters do not reset... I think all other containers in the College reset, though.

Do you have any suggestions for good places to store items before buying a home?

If you join the TG you get a safe chest. Its pretty easy to get to and fairly fast to complete.

I generally just sell all non-essentials until I can buy Breeze Home in White Run. It only costs 3k, and you get the chest in the bedroom for free so you can store things until you save up to buy the other storage areas.

Better question is... why are you carrying so much?

College of Winterhold: The room they give you when you join,
    Food barrels, unsafe
other storage in your room, safe.

I guess my main problem is selling stuff off. Merchants never seem to have enough money to buy all my potions and enchanted items. I enjoy collecting ingredients and making potions, so I have a ton of potions worth hundreds of gold each and feel like it's wasteful to just throw them out. I also have a bunch of enchanted rings and necklaces that are worth a lot too.

I'm using a mage character so I don't even have any heavy armor to carry, but I do have a few Daedric artifacts (which are among the items I want to store away).

Maybe I'm just being too much of a hoarder, but what am I supposed to do when the shopkeepers hardly have any money to buy all the stuff I want to sell them?

    Wait 2 days,

or save, punch them, and reload.

Punching and reloading actually restores their money?

Check out this link for locations with safe containers:

    http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Category:Skyrim-Places-Safe

The dresser, wardrobe, and end tables in your dorm rom at the College of Winterhold are safe. However, the food barrels are not safe, as VT has pointed out.

According to UESP the Theives Guild has NO safe containers.

If you want to know if a certain locale not mentioned in the link above has safe containers, look up that locale on UESP. Every article about a location has a box on the upper right corner of the article which will have information about the respawn time of containers.

I also usually make a trade route when I've got lots of inventory to move. I'll go from Windhelm, to Riften, to Whiterun, and by the time I get back to Windhelm the vendors have reset.

After one or two of these trips you should have more than enough money to buy Breeze Home and store the rest of your loot.

I always use Anise's Cabin as a starter storage area. It's just southwest of Riverwood and easily accessible from the beginning of the game. Also, it's free.

I suppose the only downside is you have to kill the witch, but since she is the aggressor, that's not blood on your hands, so to speak.

The end table and the chest next to your bed in the thieves guild are safe from my experience. I've also used the end table next to the alchemy lab to store ingredient. But you can always test it first as mention in above post.

In Jorrvaskr, the cupboard next to your bed. Its the only container that you can search, other container have the "steal from" action.

I just used the secret room under the Sleeping Giant Inn (or whatever it's called) until I decide to buy a home.

All chests in the thieve's guild (cistern) are safe. I use different chests for different items. Some sort of OCD organization thing... but I've never lost anything. I do stay clear of the locked chests in the training room.
