You might be running low on memory as you play the game. Delete any extra save files, make sure you have plenty of space when you play Skyrim... and don't put too many characters on one memory unit. Spread them out.
And save often
This made a HUGE difference for me.

Fast travel a place thats close to Riverwood, or just buy a horse and ride there!! you can buy a horse at the city of Whiterun, before you enter the city you'll see a guy selling horses.
I second this. The same thing happens to me. Also on XBOX360.
it did it to me until i cleared my system cache....wich should be know as the universal elder scrolls fix by now. i mean 5 games in same fix = win. or you could walk LIKE A REAL MAN!!
This doesn't happen to me. Odd enough, every time I fast travel to Riverwood, I get attacked by a blood dragon. There are like 5 reptilian corpses there now... I pwn dragons.
Fast travel to helga, then walk...
Personally I dont fast travel I enjoy the walk/run/ride to my destination. I always hated fast travel in ANY game so I say stop fast traveling and enjoy the walk...also walking lets you find many things that you would not find fast traveling.
This happened to me in one of my mage character but it was when traveling to Ivarstead- and clearing the cache solves nothing. fast travel, walking, horse back riding- no matter what, ever time my mage tried to get to Ivarstead the game froze. And this happened after I had already been to see the Greybeards. I can get to High Hrothgar, but as soon as I try to go down to Ivarstead- bam, lockdown. It has to be someting buggy in the code to trigger this.
Y-y-y-you can fast travel?
try fast traveling on horseback...it's a guess but perhaps it's that, i kept freezing in the bannered mane, a really messed up freeze too, the screen was all distorted. i did the RROD fix on my console and everytime Skyrim freezes it, my rings come back resulting in my having to overheat it to get it back in working order. RDR did the same to the 360, not just mine...play with caution, if you're using the fat model then this might be one of those games that's gonna force u to purchase a slim. good luck and happy gaming! another suggestion would be to fast travel to helgen and walk as thy're pretty close to eachother...
Or as I did with my mage character- start over. It sucks, but i did a better job of it the second time around anyway..
What should you do?
Stop being surprised. The Elder Scrolls Series (yes, that includes Skyrim) is know for being riddled with bugs. Take it back to where ever you bought it and use your right as a customer to get a new copy that ISN'T defect.
No problems whatsoever fast travelling newhere....but i have a new machine and Skyrim is one of 5 games i've played. not sure that that makes any difference but I am sincerely glad that I do not share your issues. sux to be you.....and to "The Dukez", yes, elder scrolls games have been famous for bugs, but also famous for advancing gaming to another level...something many ppl try and fail miserably at...try playing Two worlds someday, then come complain about bugs
Buy a horse
I nvr freeze up fast travel but i do freeze up in this one dungeon with the trapdoor leading u to fall into spikes i close it and boom freeze
If The Problem can not be solved , try this :
Fast Travel To Whiterun Stable And Then Walk to Riverwood . this takes less than 2 minutes if you run there.
Or , buy or steal a horse from Whiterun stables and go to Riverwood.
SKYRIM HAS A LOT OF BUGS . YOU SHOULD GET USED TO IT !!
I sincerely hope your not still trying to fast travel and i hope you have gathered the courage to face the ever so scary world of skyrim on foot...
My system (xbox) crashed for the first time a week or so ago and it was right after I had placed loot inside a crypt tomb just to rid myself of it. When I got to a loading screen it locked on me. I haven't and won't do that again. I mentioned this because maybe that happened in Riverwood.
okay dont listen to the people who say BUY A HORSE, instead do the dark brotherhood and score Shadowmere. also this happened to me when i had the game "installed" onto my 360 hdd but as soon as i removed the installed data the game actually ran better in every single way. so this is one of those few games where installing it to help the system perform better is actually a very bad thing. if its not installed then idk. just threw in my 2 cents worth.
Install the game to your hard drive
Shadowmere! go to the aventi aretino house in windhelm talk to the boy complete the quest then go to sleep complete those quests for the dark brotherhood to get the ultimamate nearly unkillable horse that can run up mountains.
I had problems with the game freezing and lagging periodically too. I Went to everywhere I had things stored and got rid of most of the stuff to reduce the size of my save file. No problems since.
Ive had a similary glitch in the dark brotherhood Death Incarnate quest. Everytime i would do the last thing i needed to do the screen would go black and I couldnt access my xbox dashboard. I finally found a solution to this and that was to unplug my controller. Doing this forced the pause screen to pop up which forced the game to load.
It maybe a defect in your disk. Try deleting your system cashe and redownloading the patches. Also try installing the game on the harddrive. If that doesn't work you may need a new game disk. If your xbox360 is getting the red ring then its the system not the game. And as far as new vs. old I'm running Skyrim on the old 360 with no problems. Also don't leave stuff just laying around in game. Sell or store your stuff. Leaving items laying around is known to freeze the game.
That sounds similar to what i have going on. Except it apparently has a 10-15% chance of happening when i fast travel ANYWHERE. Sucks...
How about you just don't go to riverwood?
Install it to your harddrive little boy!
This happend to me after i updated my game, in order to fix it I cleared my system cash, and then re updated the game. (WARNING: Deleting your system cash can possibly corrupt game data)
Fast travel to Embershard Mine which is right outside Riverwood. Alternatively you could fast travel to the Guardian Stones, which is also close by.
Go trunk your self.
Clean off your xbox disc with alcohol
why is this question still open. Surely your not still trying to get to riverwood?
