First things first. Endurance. It's pretty much THE most important attribute, as it's the only one that doesn't apply retroactively. You want to max it as soon as possible, so when you're caught up in melee fights (Which will still happen as an archer, alot), you can still manage to survive.
As for gear, make sure you're staying with your level. It's been too long, so I don't remember at what levels things actually start appearing. Just check some Bandit caves (Rockmilk Cave is a big one, which is West of Leyawiin. As is... Sercen? Think that's the name. It's North of the Imperial City, just on the East side of the road leading to Bruma) every few levels.
Lastly is healing. You may want to look into Alchemy, as it can create some fairly powerful healing potions, as well as poisons. Just raid a few farms of their crops, potion it all up, and see where you are. Restoration for instant healing doesn't work too well, as the magicka needed to get anything truly potent is quite high.
Two more things, actually. Waiting for one hour instantly restores all of your health (I don't think this works in towns, but that's not too important), also, don't be afraid to lower the difficulty. The game can be rough the first time around, especially with its flawed leveling system.
I am the one to tear your soul asunder.
