Good looks and flash can't save this disappointingly mediocre title.

User Rating: 6 | The Bouncer PS2
Am I glad that I bought this game when it finally hit the bargain bins at $9.99 Canadian. At this price, the game was well worth it. It featured high production values typical of Square-Enix (Squaresoft at that time) and is still one of the PS2's best-looking games despite its age.

Beauty is skin-deep and this game is a ripoff if priced anywhere higher than 20 bucks. Seriously, the game lasts no longer than a hiccup at around 10 hours (and that's already beating it over 3 or 4 times), the gameplay and story are only mediocre and oh man, the voice acting is cheesy and off-sets the decent music and sound. Someone also needs to teach the AI some tricks. If the enemies weren't so darn lame, your buddies would run off and get themselves killed.

Another big issue would be the character design. Despite their flamboyantly dashing good looks, I can't help but feel like I'm playing Models-Gone-Bad and I'm specifically referring to the 3 pugilists the game recognizes as 'Bouncers'. Jeez, they all look like they spend more time doing their wardrobe and hair more than working out.

I will give Bouncer some props though. Game's engine runs smoothly and attack animations are pretty solid. The VS mode is fun for a few hours or so and of course, the graphics can't be topped. But a high profile game such as this needs to deliver more than 5-10 hours of mediocre gameplay.

The Bouncer was supposedly the next big thing from Square (at the time) but fizzled out as nothing more than good-looking bargain bin pickup.
