This is the kind of game arcade junkies live for; total destruction with awesome weaponry. The game carries you across several levels, all slathered in a host of bad guys intent on blowing you from the sky. Well not as tough as some of its modern counter-parts, Blazing Lazers still dealt players a constant barrage of fire that demanded steady flying.
Blazing Users used a simple system of weapon power ups that scaled across 4 vastly differing weapon platforms. Each weapon could be upgraded multiple times, and had inherent strengths and weaknesses. These ranged from the standard "pew-pew" cannon that would simply grow additional firing arcs to a fork-lightning gun that would drag across enemy targets and wipe out "hard" locations like turrets and bunkers. Coupled with the ever present cluster bomb, these weapons would be all that stood between you and space rubble.
Blazing Lazers had a top-notch presentation level for the time, and was a showcase for the graphical power and overall polish of the Turbo-Grafix-16. It would not be an exaggeration to say that this game was arcade level quality in graphics and sound. In addition to consistent frame rates, Blazing Lazers also had a moving sound track and solid effects which helped to keep the experience moving along its steady, destructive track.
I loved this game as a kid, and sincerely hope that newer players get a chance to try it out. It is definitely one of the better arcade shooters I have played, and it would be wonderful to see people climb back into the cockpit!
