When Microsoft announced there was going to be a free poker game for Xbox Live Arcade, I wasn't totally excited because it was Poker.
Then, there were reports that it would not be free But i still didn't reallt care. Now, it was free for a time. Sadly, I didn't get it during the time it was out for free, BUT I do not regret it. While it does lack in some areas, it is still a solid and highly addictive poker game.
Gameplay : This game focuses around the highly popular variation thats taking the world by storm right now known as Texas Hold'em. This game covers every aspect of the game very well, and even new players to the game can read the tutorials and learn. The gameplay as a whole is solid. One thing about the game is when there are side pots, the pots are tallied as a whole. Unless you're very keen about poker, you won't be able to tell who wins those main pots and side pots. This is a minor flaw, however. There are plenty of single-player and multiplayer modes that you can choose from which are equally fun. Whether it be the Scenario, Tournament, Standard, or Competitive Tournament online, you will find something that you will enjoy. The pure joy of filling your bankroll is there as well.
Graphics : Don't expect to be blown away. This is an Xbox Live Arcade game, don't forget. It was not made for the hardcore gamer. If you're looking for a flashy poker game, pick up the upcoming World Series of Poker title. But if you just want some solid poker action, look no further.
Sound : The music? Well, lucky for you, you can play a custom soundtrack of your own music. Tik Games decided to make Texas Hold'em feel very Western-like, and it shows in the music and sound effects. When you take down a pot, there's that weird banjo sound, and an alternate one when you lose a pot. The music is something you would hear in a Western movie. Other than that, there's not much more to say about sound. The sound of the poker chips is nice.
Texas Hold'em may not stand as the best game on XBLA, but it is certainly a worthy title to anyone's collection. And even though it is 800 Microsoft Points, it's still worth every penny.
