if this is a simulation then I'm the next president of  USA ,NFS:Shift physics are boat physics and this is same Shift with different name .

i want to see the simulation game where the simulation is put more on the driver rather then the cars. You crash into a wall at 100 and you die , you crash at 60 and you break a leg and have to miss a few months of the calender and lose points. You make rivalrys with other racers and if you do to much stupid stuff then your sponsor drops you and you have to get another one.

The problem (in my opinion) with modern racers is that I dont car that the car is slightly shinyer than the year before and i dont care about what the car looks like. I care about what happens to the car when i mess up and i care about how different driving styles and decisions effect my game.

This game is underrated. All of the cars drive nicely, tracks are fine, deserves up to 8/10. I finished the game in hard difficulty, mostly it was easy, a few missions were almost close to impossible, but fractionally done.

This is a simulation game, with few flaws, I accept, but this game makes a great multiplayer racing fun who likes to drive.

Whoever doesn't agree with the review has obviously not bought the game. THIS GAME IS TERRIBLE. I've bought just about every racing game in the last 15 years and this is the first time I've wanted my money back. Don't believe me? Well go spend your money you chumps.

How can you give this game a low score because you can't drive properly? "Absense of rewind feature"? Please... Tell me how many racing games have that. I bet you would give "The Impossible Game" a 0/10 because it's hard.80% of this video is about you crashing the car, how is that helpful? You unlock things by winning, is that a new concept in videogames to you? -.-''

Incredible, really...

@FocusRS wow, ya give the impossible game a 0/10, DUH and not because its "hard" but because its impossible, who wants to play an impossible game? seriously do u not read what your posting before you post it?

incredible.....really

...so bottom line is it is a racing game that is actually challenging?!

Why give such a low score just because the reviewer isn't good at racing games

"No rewind feature" - why is this person reviewing a racing sim game?!

Who the hell gave Caro this game. Horrible, horrible video review. Haven't read the write up, hope there is a better reason for giving this game a 5.5 besides the opaqueness of campaign mode and lackluster graphics,

Driving cars is fun and not away from realism. On the other hand, AI cars troublesome - assuming this is a sim racing game- AIs should be racing decently, not like a youngster at the internet rooms! "Hard" skill is hardly "hard" ! They have forgotten "ver hard" or "world class" etc. I needed much more technical options to adjusting cars, though.

Too many unnecessary non-rewarding career races bored me.

I really like to have a game like 10-years-old-NFSPorsche! someday...

So a race-sim which doesnt have rewind option and makes you grind to unlock stuff. Wheres the problem? The fact that it is a 'sim' means you'd have to be decent at racing games to play it. I shudder to think what the reviewer would've given Gran Turismo 4 as there was no 'interactive racing line'...

Its reminds me of the need for speed porsche challange from 10years ago that was great 10 years ago. Driving games dont "need" a rewind feature, sometimes its fun to have to catchup and overtake again in a race.Maybe if you could pass so many races to unlock this or that would be better than having to finsh races in that order. I wont be buying this. I prefer forza but thats just me :)

Ferrari f355 challenge on the dream-cast over 10 years ago did the simulator thing and quite well. If your a Ferrari hat wearing financial millionaire yuppie mortgage adviser knock yourself out. Though it looks pretty good, i think driving games have moved on since.

shit game... copies too much of gran turismo, Great range of cars... but still, to hard, to frustrating, too long, bad steering (depends on which car), hard courses, dissapointing graphics for mid 2012.... Play gran turismo 5 guys... its got tons of ferraris and is heaps good! But this game doesnt even deserve a 4.0

assuming this feels like a real racing sim in the PC version...

1. rewind has no business being in a proper racing sim (good)

2. limited access to driver assists on/off... whether that's a console issue or will be in the PC as well, that ain't indicative of a SIM (bad)

3. aggressive (homicidal) AI = lazy/incompetent programmers (bad)

4. Racing sims are not meant for, nor do they give any satisfaction with anything less than a wheel controller.  Gamepads don't cut it... IF it's a real sim.

I could live without excessive unlockables since my gaming time is limited and I like to get in and just race what I want, where I want... but if there is a punishment system in place for lack of skill I am all for it.  Assuming the AI doesn't make it impossible to enjoy, then screw all the 'special' kids these days that have been raised to think they can do anything.

Some people are just crap at life, including games... develop some skills or go do something else.

Racing games didn't have rewind options for years. Rewind is a cop-out.

Kookooburra

@sirkibble2 what if poor AI ruin your race?

sirkibble2
sirkibble2

@Kookooburra Good thought but that's when I restart the race. I should have stated that it was my opinion cause that's where I was coming from.

I'm sort of purist when it comes to racing and Rewind takes away the purity of earning the win instead or rewinding to make things suit your circumstance. I just sort of accept it and restart but I won't rewind. It makes things pitifully easy.

sirkibble2
sirkibble2

@Kookooburra It is a sim according to Caroline. It's certainly not an arcade racer. And Forza had a rewind feature in their games so it being sim really has nothing to do with whether rewind is in it or not.

To answer your question though cause I know you have point: I haven't played a proper PC sim. :)

Kookooburra
Kookooburra

@sirkibble2 yes, but this isn't a sim ASFAIK, so I don't think excluding options is a great idea, it comes off as a "cheap as chips" approach to game making IMO.

Do you play proper PC sims?

The proposed downsides to the game aren't convincing me. Having to unlock content is attractive, and not allowing one to continue to do so past each successive track does not seem like the worst thing in the world.

"Rewind" is a stupid crutch that games like Forza have made a "standard." The classic Gran Turismo games didn't have that. Rewind just enables sloppier driving because it makes it ok to take stupid risks that one would not take if there were more at stake. Bravo Atari for not having a rewind.

Indeed, it would have been nice to hear more about the actual driving, as the core game looks pretty cool on this review. The game may be mediocre, but the review has not convinced me of that.

I kinda would have liked a little more comment on how the driving model and the tracks were rather than complaining about having to play the game to unlock cars and having no rewind option. The campaign mode sounds cool to me, like Porsche Unleashed or GT Legends was, but then again, I actually know how to play racing sims.  It's cool if the reviewer doesn't like the campaign mode, but that seems to be all she based her review on. Sim players like myself would have liked to know more.

Dear Gamespot and Carolyn Petite,

So let me get this straight.  @gamespot editors complain and write multiple opinion articles about how modern games hold your hand. Then right on this site this review is 90% about how hard, how not "fair" a linear game is that...oh wait...doesn't hold your hand. Shouldn't this piece be an opinion column somewhere about how nice modern games are, the ones that have the "win" button right there at the top of the screen?

So 5 years ago, a game with great selection of vehicles, decent controls, and varied race types would easily have gotten a 8.0 or better (see: Grid, a fine game that I still can't beat because the later events are damn hard). Now - no "rewind" features, no "level skip"?!!?? (that one really gets me), and no "autopilot" basically means the game is not good enough to even get a 7.5.

This simply sets the standard for reviews that if a game is not immediately beatable or unlocks everything right from the gate that it's not worth playing. I actually think Ferrari gets GREAT representation from this game because the people who earn the nice Ferrari ride have put in the right hours and worth to deserve it. Ferrari has always been about elite performance, not peddling to the everyman -- so what exactly is wrong with making you work to appreciate your unlocks?

Carolyn - I have been reading and watching your reviews for a while, but this is the first one that's really irked me. Why don't you tell me about the game and its cars, how it feels / handles, how it PLAYS and let ME DECIDE if it's too hard for me? Make comparisons to NFS Shift Unleashed, or to Forza like most other reviewers, fit the game into the right spectrum. Say _one_ time that it's hard (okay, we get it). Move on.

At the end of the day, what really gets me is that this review, and many others from the press are not actually telling me enough to decide whether or not to buy the game. "I had a hard time with it" is not a review - it's a whine. WHY did you have a hard time with it, and can you possibly see someone ELSE not having a hard time? I literally read EVERY word of the written review trying to find if me, a Forza / GT / sim racing fanatic could enjoy the game. And I frankly, just can't decide one way or the other and need to see a demo of the game in action (driven by someone who knows how to follow a racing line) to get it. Gee, thanks. That was really something.

Not liking a game - NOT a bad review. Whining - bad review. Shame on you Gamespot.

@parasiticpest The review was done by a person that doesn't seem to like driving games. The carrer mode seems pretty solid and the graphics and physics are on a good level. I can only tell that it's a good choice for a  racing game, mainly if you are trying to skip generic racers (racing games don't get launched as often as I would like, and most of what comes out are simply not good).

And yes, some gamespot's reviews are getting really unfair, just complains, no good side.

BECAUSE THE DRIVING IN THIS REVIEW SUCKED!!!

Hmm...something tells me all the faults in this review aren't gonna bother me enough to not play this game.  I'm kind of excited to play a sim that is challenging...even if it may not seem fair sometimes.

People did fine playing the various Gran Turismo titles without a rewind feature. Don't really see why a sim should need one. Sure it's a nice extra, but in my opinion it shouldn't be a feature whose absence impacts the review score. The campaign structure though does seem a bit unfortunate. Perhaps they could change that with an update.

 @SDFKrusher I don't think you'll find a knowledgeable person describing this as a sim.

ZwaanME

@SDFKrusher They will probably release one or more DLC which allow you to play any car and any track from a certain era for the 'reasonable' price of 800 Microsoft Points per pack...

o3o0o
o3o0o

@SDFKrusher  Campain structure may help a driver (player) to get the best out of that particular car in terms of handling and having the fastest time using and understanding the physics of that machine. What I really wonder is how it feels multiplayer online... Just had the game, started playing recently.

Preorderer... Simulations are my thing. I like this game very much and don't think there should be any rewinding feature in sims. I strongly want a Porsche edition to this, though... Ford and BMW, too...

@Masenkoe gran turismo 5 hasn't got a rewind feature, it also doesn't have every car unlocked at the start so why has that got a good review, obviously it has 1000+ cars but in my opinion the rewind feature is useless to, if i make a mistake in dirt 3 i restart, i think I've used 9 flashbacks in dirt 3 and about 3 ib grid, i also hated the rewind feature in the run as you cant choose where to start from, bad review and has focused too much on difficulty

On the cover of the game it says "The ultimate ferrari driving experience".  How they managed to make the game experience more ultimate than driving an actual ferrari is quite a feat...
