Action, exploring, crafting, and conquering! Terraria takes its inspiration from many a classic to forge one of its own.

User Rating: 8.5 | Terraria PC
Terraria is a two dimensional, side-scrolling, action, adventure, exploring, and crafting game from the creative minds at Re-Logic Studios. Independently created and crafted, Terraria offers hours of entertainment in a Minecraft meets Castlevania on the SNES kind of mix mash, that will keep you entertained and exploring deep into the hours of the night. With subpar graphics, a ten dollar price tag, and legions of spawning slimes, zombies, and goblins, Terraria is a new kind of adventure drawn from multiple inspirations and genres of the past.

In Terraria you'll fight monsters, bosses, and rare spawns while discovering treasure, forgotten artifacts, and legendary items. You'll explore the landscapes above, the depths of hell below, and everything you've gathered in-between can be used to craft weapons, items, or armor, while building a kingdom to attract vendors from across the land. In Terraria the world is yours to explore, destroy, and rebuild-any way you see fit. With a random world generator, customizable gameplay, and the ability to import characters to a new world to play alone or with friends, Terraria does its predecessors proud while remaining a cheap and enjoyable time sink.

The Good:

• Addictive – Terraria is one of those games you'll play for hours without realizing how late it is-and even when you do, you'll still keep playing.
• Fun Multiplayer – Most games are better with friends and Terraria is no exception. Allowing 8 player co-op through Steam services, Terraria allows players to play with friends, or to meet new ones through multiplayer options.
• Price – At $10 a copy you really can't go wrong. Terraria even offers 4 licenses for $29.99 if you have friends willing to go in with you or you're feeling generous and don't want to play alone.
• Innovative – Terraria is creative. Though it takes multiple genres and mashes them together the final product remains different and exciting.
• Free Content Updates in the future – There's nothing better than free! With Re-Logic Studios promising new content and updates without charge, Terraria is looking to have some staying power.

The Bad:

• Graphics – The graphics are old school: 2D, side-scrolling, and somewhere between 8 and 16 bit. Though I thought the graphics suited the game and gameplay, some players will undoubtedly see them as a turn off, while others won't give Terraria a chance past the first glance.
• Limited Content – Even with recent content updates, re-summonable bosses, and future releases promised, Terraria is still fairly light on content. Many players will tear through the game, explore everything in sight, and end up maxed out equipment wise with nothing left to do long before the next update.
• Steep Learning Curve – Terraria is an unforgiving, often brutal, game you'll definitely have to read the guide for. Fortunately it's relatively easy to play once you have the "knowhow"-it's just getting the "knowhow" that can be a challenge.

The Ugly:

• Hell – Hell is difficult, over-populated with fire imps, and very frustrating even for the best geared players. Unfortunately, it's down here where you'll be spending the majority of your end game time trying to mine, fight, and survive long enough to make it to back to the surface without suffering death upon gruesome death.

Saigo Says: Get it! I loved this game and for only $10 you won't be disappointed. Be patient, do a little research on strategy and how to survive, and Terraria will probably be that hidden "gem" of the summer you'll be glad you never missed.
