I have a laptop and a desktop PC. For some reason, both have the same IP addresses. o_O I read that each PC is provided their own address, yet, these two machines share the same address. >_> It's very strange. I play Minecraft with my nephew on our home network and I host, or he hosts, and everything is fine. No IP conflict or anything. I just hosted a server for us of Terraria, he connected just fine on his desktop to my server. Now I'm trying to start a server on his desktop for Terraria, which does launch. But when he tries to connect to his server, it won't let him. Would it happen to be because two machines here share the same IP address?

It sounds like you two are using a router to connect to the internet. The router has the 'real' ip address and the router gives your two computers 'inside' ip address, usually something like 192.168.1.101 and 192.168.1.102. Your nephew can start the server on his machine, then if he's running the game on the same machine he'll use the 'inside' ip address.
If someone on the outside wants to connect to your nephews server, you'll need to access your router, and forward the port to his computer.

No, just you and whoever connect on a Hamachi network(that one person makes with a click) and anyone on that network can make the Terraria server.
To join that server just type in that persons Hamachi IP, which is only like 7 digits I think as opposed to a normal legneth one

I don't get it.
I'm able to host a server on my laptop just fine. On the other desktop, my nephew enters the IP address of my laptop and joins and plays.
When he hosts his own server on his desktop, he's able to host, but not join his own server. I know the ports are forwarded just fine. We're all under the same router. I followed the exact steps from the stickied guide on how to host and run your own Terraria server, and it didn't help. What it did was mess with my network internet, which I fixed easily. I mean, I can host and we can play, but it's a little laggy for me. His PC is way more powerful and way faster, which is why I suggested that he host and we play on his server.

They have the same external IP but internally they're different.

Yeah, I actually learned that yesterday lol. My main issue is that I can't get get my nephew to join his server from his PC for some reason. It just hangs there trying to connect.

Get him to open up command prompt (Start > Run > cmd) and type in "ipconfig" without the quotes. Whatever number it shows for ipv4 is the IP he should use to connect.
EDIT: Also, i forgot to mention, terraria has a problem with its MP. If he has any extra networks, they all need to be disabled. ONLY the network he's using to actively connect to the internet is allowed to be enabled. You can disable them from windows' "network and sharing centre".

The terraria server requires a specific port to be opened in order to work.
If you have opened the port in your router, it is highly possible that it is pointing to a specific PC so when you try to connect, it may go to the wrong computer on the "inside" network.
Try changing the port forwarding to the ip address of the computer hosting the server.
