How do you change models/costumes in multiple modes of the game?

I have tried in the arena, practice, and VS modes in the game to play as different models/costumes of Characters but it always gives me the 2p model. How do I change it on the various modes, is there a button? Or do I have to choose one on settings?

Player 1 costume - B button
Player 2 costume - A button
Player 3 costume (if there is one) - X button

To customize the character's outfits, it's under Profile > Customize.
